I loosen the strap to take the tension off of it. Over the years, that weakens the sewn end where it loops over and holds the hook, and it comes apart - sometimes at a not so good time. I've had to repair it a couple of times on my old boat (h200). My h200 would ride fine on the trailer without the winch strap tight, but then again, it had a double roller...

I was hoping that the h220 would work the same way, but apparently the single roller doesn't allow it, with the trailer flexing and the like. I dropped by my old mechanic, and that was his theory anyway. I'll probably upgrade to a better strap, and use the extra red tiedowns as a "safety chain".
