For those of you that can't use studs, the Bridgestone Blizzak is the next best thing. In fact they might be better under certain conditions. The only downside to them is the short life of the multi cell compound. In my use I have gotten 6-7 years of use out of the studded tires I have used on both of the Jeeps and the Subaru. I'm now using General Arctic Altimax studded tires. They are the best moderately priced tire I could find. I used to use Nokians but they got too expensive.

My obsession with the best winter traction goes back a long way....1980 to be exact, driving home from Long Island to my family home in Westchester NY. Light snow on the Northern State Parkway in Nassau/Suffolk changed to frozen over freezing rain on the Clearview Expressway heading north to the Throgs Neck Bridge. Came over a hill and heard an odd sound, it was the sound of cars spinning out of control. Right in front of me a '64 Pontiac Le Mans spins 180 and stops facing me in my lane. I'm driving my parents' '75 Olds Delta 88 (full size tank thank God). I'm pumping the brake for all I'm worth and that thing is not stopping. Hit the Le Mans head on at about 20 mph. Everyone OK, fender and bumper pushed back on the Le Mans, on the Olds (huge 5 mph bumpers, heavy steel with shock absorbers on the frame) the bumper was pushed back like 2". That is all. We had regular radials on the front and non studded snows on the rear. Well after that I have always put on the best snow tires I could find for whatever I've driving in the following years. No one else uses them here. I get funny looks all the time because of the noise the studs make.

We have always fitted our vehicles with blizzak's as they are among best ice tire out there. This year I made the switch to a deep lug winter tire with studs for my wife's Oddyssey.

All i can say is... wow, why did I wait so long to try them out!?

Now her van out handles my 4X4 F-150 hands down in the snow slush and ice.

When I lived in Maine I had a 1995 Cherokee 2wd. In the winter I would install firestone winterforce snow tires with studs and yeah... blizzard? ice? unplowed roads? Not even a concern.

Kinda makes me get all sentimental right now. It's been 10 years since I've lived/seen snow.

You are all spoiled, I grew up in Ohio in the 80's ....and poor. I drove a 1958 Plymouth with bald tires, never chains or studs...never had a problem...just learned how to drive in the snow..of course I haven't lived ther in 17 years...maybe snow is different now....?

Well, I grew up in suburban Westchester NY; got my license in '72. And they have something you might not have too many of in Ohio, hills. With rear drive you weren't going anywhere without studded snows on the rear and 200 lbs of sandbags in the trunk.

No worries, that's why we have JEEPS. Any Northerner learns that if you're smart you keep at least one JEEP or other 4x4 around for lousy winters. LOL I recall back in the day of the original muscle cars my friends who had them trying to drive them in the snow. It wasn't pretty. I started with front drives back in '80 and then transitioned to the real deal, JEEP 4x4.

Always have had 4x4..no snow but rain would get you stuck in mud real quick unless you live in subdivision. It used to take 4x4 to make it down my driveway til 10 loads of crushed concrete was installed.

chilling at the office, eating an orange, sipping a RedBull.

past few evenings i have been working on the last of the knives for the christmas orders.. you can follow me on instagram http://instagram.com/jdblades/ for up to date photos of works in progress.

Other than that i have been changing diapers. operating on a couple hours of power naps a night, and mentally planning the work not he boat over the holiday time around the new year.

Plan: get the bulk heads finished. Make the fuel tank hatch. Have everything ready and marked for glass. Then the plan is to glass the back sides of every thing so that come warmth days outside i can toss the parts into the boat and glass them into place.

Few things left to order.
