I had 3 of the rub rail inserts under my fuel tank too. Four Winns must of been using them as spacers to keep some bilge space open between the gas tank and the hull. Any ideas on how you are going to reinstall the tank back into the well while keeping that space open under the tank?

My plan is to 4200 them to the painted bilge and reuse them. I figure if they have worked for 20 years and they are not dry rotten, fuqc it.

one night this past week i spent 20 min scrubbing and cleaning the tank.

Well Sunday i got a nice little 3.5 hour window of productive work done in-between storms.

Man hours total 13.83 hours so far.

Sunday 11/16/2014

Straight cut the last of the old deck out to mate with the new deck.
removed the stern bulkhead. Man it was rotten from the glass line down. if they had fully glassed the wood maybe it would have lasted 30 years. Well i know that the work that i am doing will insure another 20+ years of life to this hull.

Image

time for grinding. Lets make some dust.

Image

Image

I was covered head to toe by the end of the work time. A mix of glass dust and saw dust.

Image

Well come to find out that they used seam to joint multiple pieces of ply as the stringers and the middle section on the PORT side needed to be gone. So i cut it out and made a new insert. In addition I finished the "inner stringer supports" these will be glassed to the stringers and add strength obviously. But mainly they are going to be notched at the tops for a lip for the under the locker hatch support to mate with and distribute load to the stringers from the hatch. This will make walking on the hatch not separate the recess support of the hatch inlay separate from the floor. Probably over kill but i know it will be solid and that is the entire point. I will be adding foam to that one air pace on the port side that was open from the factory.

Image

I got the bulkheads made. the stern one did not turn out perfect on the port side and will be recut for a better fit. I could goop a nice thick helping of thickened resin to fill that void but i would rather just cut a new board and be good to go. On the left (starboard side) you can see the cut down int he inner support, that is the passage way under deck for the fuel fill and vent lines to route. On the port side (aka right in this pic) a hole will be drilled for the fuel feed from the pickup. I am making the rear bulkhead 2 layers of 3/4 for 1.5" thick for plenty of strength and support of the fuel hatch. The fuel hatch will be reseessed into the floor and will have 8 or so SS screw securing it to the support along with 4200 calk in the screws and a bead in the seam of the hatch. I will not need access to the tank often BUT in the even that i do. I will have the ability to take a razor to the seam and pull the hatch. this was the best solution for dry and accessible that i could come up with.

Image

I am 80% done with the wood for the floor. The floor supports prove to take much longer to get the countour of the hull exact than expected. double rear bulkhead, under support of the hatches, and cut the locker hatch hole. Then i move onto the rear bench box which will be a breeze. Then the rear hatch. I am happy eight the man hours and the work that is done this so far. I learned a few tricks for the floor stringer contours that would make life faster int he future.

I am sure i spent 15 minutes sunday combined looking for the damn tape measure that was either not he saw horses or the boat, sometimes it was clipped to the back of overalls but kept falling off was the issue. Also climbing in and out of the boat has brought e to want to make a 3 step small stair case for the stern which i feel would help me get in and out of the boat with no hands. As it is now i have to lift and set whatever into the boat then climb in. A small set of steps would eliminate this.

Ahhh having flashbacks lookin at your pics!! You know you should have the big P-100 particle filters on that mask for grinding. That stuff is very bad for your lungs. The cartridges you have look like the organic vapor ones with the small pre-filters...
I was thinking you'd find either a stringer or bulkhead somewhere that needed to be torn out and replaced. Yes they only glassed them up half way, stapled the deck down and did not seal any holes. Then covered it with moisture holding carpet. Any wonder why it rotted?
I felt at the time it was better to rebuild it the right way because any other older used boat would have the same crappy construction.
Your child will be running that boat one day!!

you using a multi tool to cut any of that out? looks like you could get a little closer to some surfaces for an $80 investment.

sadly this is why i paid to have mine re done!

couple pages back.. yes i use a multi tool. it is pretty dam close on the cut off. the rear bulkhead they had like 5 gallons of resin bobbed everywhere and i was grinding that all off. Their was such a roll up in resin to the bulkhead that it forced me to actually be cutting about 1/4 inch of wood up from the true floor so that was the grinding as the filled the corners a metric but ton...

this is a chemical grade filter. It is the finest particle filter on the market for these masks.. I can stick my head up a cows ass wight his thing on and not smell a thing and scent particles are finer than the fiberglass particles.. I have to get the shop vac out next and get all the shit up.. I have a 3 stage cyclone particle separator double filtration dust collector and it puts out supra clean air. In the shop i also have a 2 stage draft forced air filter that is mounted to the ceiling. My shop stays very clean... As for sanding the prep glass area well i made a hell of a lot of dust but good thing i had a decent breeze to take care of it.. The boat will need the leaf blower and then a good moist sponge wipe down before we continue.

YEa i was hoping the stringers would be good.. but at least only one 5' section seam to seam was bad so i simply just cut out that section.. i assume that they built the stringers in short sections because of ass backwards logic. hahaha

well at least i will know what is under my feet and i will have documentation for when i go to sell the boat of the work that was done..

Dad is going to survey the boat for me when i am done.. I so not feel that i will have made it a 20k boat by any means but i sure as hell hope i make my money back. Which i am dam sustain i will and will push the boat to the top of market value. And that is all that i can hope for. Come in the future to time to sell i will know that i have one of the better no the water and that is fine. I got the boat for such a steel form the beginning it would be very hard for me to get in the red. I have yet to sell a boat and not double my investment.

Today I plan to take off early and make the final centering measurements for the ski locker hatch and start cutting the hole and working on the router work not he lips. Depending on time as we have friends coming for dinner tonight i may or may not fire the router today. But Sunday is supposed to rain all day so i am sure i will be able to get it all nice and tidy sunday.

1/4 round lips
recessed flush hinges
double stack flush face

so probably 45-1hour of routing needed and the hatch should be in.

1.5 hours set up to tear down. Now at 15.1 total man hours
I did spend about 15-20 talking to the neighbor.

Well yesterday was too nice of a day to spend in the office so I headed home at 2:30. I spent some time vacuuming the boat. Then it was to the fun stuff. Slid the front section of the floor in and laid the hatch in, with some tell screws I positioned it perfectly to open centered in the dash walkway. Removed and it was time to cut the hole. I cut the hole 1/4" oversized to allow for fiberglass growth and the hatch some wiggle room. After glass it should be more like 1/8" of gap. I will be doing a glass growth test first to make sure I do not need to router another 1/16 or 1/8 off.

Lookin great. Love the look of new wood in an old boat. I can almost smell the sawdust.

well i figure i would do a little update for those interested.. things have been slow the past couple weeks with the birth of my son.. but i have continued to plan out my attack..

Plan: get the bulk heads finished. Make the fuel tank hatch. Have everything ready and marked for glass. Then the plan is to glass the back sides of every thing so that come warmth days outside i can toss the parts into the boat and glass them into place.

Few things left to order.

Dad upgraded my bow anchor on the boat by just a little. Lol. Went from a 5# slide neck with short chain to 8# danforth with 18' of chain. Yea I think I have solved the dragging issue that I have been having in our favorite cove. And it fits perfectly in the locker.

Got some goodies yesterday. Garmin GLO blue toothe GPS receiver. Pelican box for the receiver and the power cord. I need to get some sort of stick slide resistent rubber for the base to secure it to the dash.

Is the Bluetooth GPS receiving and transmitting ok from inside that Black Pelican Case? Often, black cases have enough carbon in them that they are conductive and therefore shield RF transmission. A clear covered case might work better for you.

This is what REI had, I'm going to give this a try for the next week or so. But I have been thinking of exchanging for a clear. They were flat sold out of clear and color when I went. But it got a great signal in the box in the store so I figured it would work.

I had to look up what the GLO was. It looks pretty cool.

Does it work with Garmin apps only?

What device are you pairing it with?

It is not app specific. I am pairing it with my 7" iPad mini in a life proof case, Navionics maps, and a Ram Mount. This will be my chart plotter. Navionics instantly paired with the signal.
