I have the luckiest GF in the world.

She told me her car wouldn't start this morning to goto work, just cranks so she got a ride to work. It's a Mazda RX8. Shit. Okay so I head over this evening to check it out. I have a code scanner so I scan the car, nothing. It just cranks but literally no firing what so ever. RX8's have coil pack issues but let's not jump that gun let's check the normal things. Rotary engines love oil and need oil to make compression and run so I ask: When's the last time you checked/changed the oil? GF: IDK. Check the oil: Nothing on the dip stick. ****.

Run to the store and grab 4 quarts of oil. Car requires 3 quarts (only holds 4.5). Damn. So in an attempt to get it running again I forgot to pull the fuel pump fuse while it builds up oil pressure again to finally build compression, flood the motor. RX8's are famous for flooding.

Okay so now we have to do the de-flood procedures. I don't have my full tool kit so I can't just pull the plugs gotta do it old school. Pull fuel pump fuse start it for a bit at WOT, let it sit. Repeat. Did that a few times, put fuse back it.. kinda wanted to start but not catch. Pull fuse again and clear it out cranking for a bit, then went inside for 30 minutes. Came back out, cranked it without the fuse for 10 seconds, put fuse back in, and it caught once and died. Pull fuse, repeat, finally got it to run on it's own for just a second but wanted to die, so I floor it. It almost died but BAM I got RPMs! Ran it at high idle for a few moments let the car warm up, and yep it idles now. Stopped the motor, starts right up. Fixed for now but I'm quite sure the engine isn't very happy to have been running on insanely low oil levels.

I hope you used a mineral based oil, as apex seals hate esters, commonly used in synthetic oil blends...

I wish we could protect all Wankels from non gear heads....it is issues like this that cause people to think they are junk.

The girl never checked/changed the oil. Rotaries use oil. You need to add oil on occasion or you kill it.

Especially in this day and age, uninformed people expect cars to act like a refrigerator. They assume it is fine until one day it just quits working....but in the case of the car, you do need to do a little bit of maintenance now and again. A rotary takes just a bit more.

I Iove rotary motors but they should make people take a class before owning one. I don't foresee the seals in her motor lasting till summer after that abuse, heck... They might not last today.

I'd trade in the rx8 before the driving without oil becomes a bigger issue.

Rotaries are kind of like 2 strokes; they require more knowledge on the part of the operator.
I recall way back in the early 70s when the 1st gen rotaries were sold by Mazda. Compared to the 4 cyl engines of the time they were a revelation; smooth, powerful and would rev to 7000.
They did have seal issues though most of which were covered under warrantee. Mazda put the engine back into development and went back to the piston engine for a few years. Then they brought it back in the RX7 in 78-79 and by then they were pretty trouble free...

They were taking too long to anything so I took matters into my own hands. Got most of the outside done today.

Started out with some On/Off hull cleaner to remove all the brown stains. All I could find locally for buffing was 3M Super Duty, but it worked very well (and quick) for being an old school clay based compound but tough to work with especially being a record setting day with 92 degree temps. Followed it up with Meguiars Marine "Pure Wax" and it came out to a very high gloss finish! Still have the cockpit and cabin to detail this weekend. I forgot to bring the equipment to remove some of the outdated vinyl graphics so I'll have to do that this weekend and blend in the areas with buffing compound.

Before. This is not dirty, that's how it looked after it was washed and hull acid cleaned. YUCK! :oops:
