Following on from my earlier thread trying to start my recent four winns purchase. I have just pulled the head and can see why its stuck fast, water has gotten into 2 of the cylinders and caused mayhem with rust etc

It all seems way too damaged to try to repair so I was thinking of getting another long block and heads.

Please can you check the pictures below and confirm its beyond repair plus perhaps answer some of these questions?

http://s886.photobucket.com/user/terryf ... t=3&page=1

1) Do I need a new intake manifold? I see its rusty on 1 side, does this mean its ruined?

2) Whats the easiest way to disconnect the flywheel from the outdrive? Engine is Volvo Penta 5.7 OSi with XDP outdrive. (I want to change the flywheel at time of replacing engine as it has 1 broken tooth)

3) I see 2 different engines for sale one for mechanical fuel pump and one for electronic fuel pump, how can I tell which I have (boat is 2008 four winns vista)

4) what do I have to do after replacing engine, I'm guessing its not plug and play like a usb hard drive :-) I marked distributor position when removing but that's irrelevant now I guess. Is this something i can get going if I hook everything up right, or will I need to call a pro in to finish it off?

5) Finally should I buy remanufactured or brand new? I found reman for around $2000 and new for just under $3000

also any other words of advice would be greatly appreciated

from the looks of those pictures if you can afford if I would bite the bullet and just get a new complete engine that way you can spend your time out on the water not in the bilge working on ongoing problems if the engine took in water then sat for a long time there are probably many issues

The engine isn't the only thing i would be changing out. While it's out get yourself another drive.

That engine looks nasty!
As there are no moving parts on your intake manifold, it should be perfectly fine once hot tanked.
A Vortec long block would be an ideal upgrade & you should get a couple of hundred $ for the good Vortec head.
Please keep this thread going, by supplying updates to the build! 8)

You got the boat at a good price; go with a new long block, new manifolds, starter etc.

I second a complete drop in if the price is reasonable but that's me. I don't like working on things twice. Also, I second a new or rebuild drive. That's the composite drive right? I wouldn't want one of those.

If its the XPD composite disaster, dump it and install a used SX drive and transom assembly.....DO not put a dime into that system, they make an OMC Cobra look like a perfectly engineered jewel.

I agree that was a great price. Now it's time to earn your equity. Didn't realize that it had the composite drive, if that true change it. It's probably what caused your engine problems. Do some homework on your drive. I looked at an 08 online in ft lauderdale I thought it was a
278. It had xdp drive that I didn't know much about. So I did some homework. That's why boat was so cheap, regardless of motor if it has an xdp drive it has NO resale value. The motor will come out without removing drive but it's tight. Basically unplug harness. 4 bolts in back, motor mount bolts, fuel lines, ground wires on both sides of motor and some odd and ends. Do u have a way to lift it out?

OMG, that engine looks much worse than expected. That must have been going bad for quite some time for there to be rust in the intake manifold! As others have said, looks like a long-block is the way to go.

Regarding the XPD drive... I think there is a least one member here that is successfully using the XPD drives. I agree that hey are horrible for resale value. But you don't necessarily need to change them. You just need to read about them (not just here, but also on iboats.com) and make up your own mind.

1.) It is an XDP composite drive, not XPD

2.) Don't waste your time reading, the drives are junk, and not worth all the headaches to attempt a repair.

3.) Spend the approx. $10K for a long block and DP drive.

While they may work for some, here are some of the problems:
Bellows leak if you trim up, they tried 3 different styles, too many hoses jammed in there.
Worse, the transom mounts crack eventually. So you do all that work, put in a new engine, and a few years later...get to pull it all over again!!!
I bet if you are careful, you could score a used SX transom mount, and get a rebuilt SX/DP, it will cost some bucks for sure but then you'll have a boat you can keep a long time and will be able to sell easily.

You need to price out cost. New engine & drive vs. a new boat. The engine & drive maybe the way to go, but you must consider all options.

As to the rust, with an open system that is normal. You may want a closed system if you go with a new engine.

It's a 2008. I don't think if he paid retail for everything he would be in the realm of buying the same boat. Where are you located. There is a duoprop craigslist cincy for 4k. I would bet he has the transom mount also.

I know a local boat mechanic that has Volvo 275,280,and 290 out drives for 750.00 a piece . He says they are in excellent condition. Also has rebuilt Volvo engines

sorry for the late reply and thanks for lal the advice guys.

powermaker, wehre is the guy with the outdrives located please? does he have transom mounts for them.

The XDP is working OK but I have heard plenty of horror stories and will change it if I can find one for reasonable money

as for the engine I got a reman long block.

spent the past few days working out best way to get engine out, I read the brave stories of people using trees and slings etc but knowing my luck I'd end up dropping the engine on my head and it would be lights out for good :-)

So I bought some pallet racking instead, once job is over I will cut in half and use in my garage

picture below
http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac61 ... 055151.jpg

I am going to attempt removal tomorrow

can anyone help me with installing distributor as that is the thing I think is gonna get me. I hear you have to rotate engine until 1 cycling is at the top and ensure you are not on exhaust stroke

I cleaned the manifold and bought new impeller and distributor cap

am going to try to change the ring gear too as one tooth is damaged, main worry is getting distributor rotation correct

thanks again for the help
