How high is pallet racking? Do you have a chain come along ? I brought engine up and then rotated it sideways to get out of the bilge. Boatinfo.com I think is website and u can see a service manual for your motor. You will need a timing chain cover. Do u have a sensor in the cover? I didn't and had to order a cover without a hole drilled in it as the plug that was with automotive cover hit. You will need a fuel pump cover depending on engine block. There is a spot for mechanical pump an ours is electric. Is your block stamp 880? Your motor is a lot newer than mine so there will be some differences. You will have to read up on setting timing for ur motor u have to trick it into base timing mode. You will also have to adjust valves on vortex head or my motor u did. Take a lot of pictures and label well. It's not that bad a job. Good luck

Pallet racking is 12ft High

have disconnected all of the cabled and most of the hoses, almost ready to attempt removal

am going to try to leave sterndrive in place for now and slide engine forward before lifting, yes I do have a chain comealong, I removed the engine hatch and seat on top of it already to make it an easier work area.

Do I have to adjust valves on head if it all came made up on the longblock??

Mine came with tags that said it had to be done. Might depend on where motor comes from.

Pull the outdrive. The outdrive's drives haft goes thru the transom gimbal bearing horizontally and the engine must be lifted vertically. The outdrive comes off fairly easily.

mine isnt the same drive but my motor came out without pulling drive. It was my alignment tool when i put motor back in...lol I do agree it is easier with drive off, I have done it both ways.

well engine is out at long last, I left sterndirve in place for now
pic below

only problem was I damaged something at the bottom of the oil pan where the dipstick goes in, all the oil leaked out from there, not sure of its the pan itself I damaged or the part where the dipstick connects to it (see below)

I see oil pans pretty cheap but they don't have the dipstick holes, any ides on where to buy either oilpan or dipstick connector please

thanks

sorry for the late reply and thanks for lal the advice guys.

powermaker, wehre is the guy with the outdrives located please? does he have transom mounts for them.

The XDP is working OK but I have heard plenty of horror stories and will change it if I can find one for reasonable money

as for the engine I got a reman long block.

spent the past few days working out best way to get engine out, I read the brave stories of people using trees and slings etc but knowing my luck I'd end up dropping the engine on my head and it would be lights out for good :-)

So I bought some pallet racking instead, once job is over I will cut in half and use in my garage

I am going to attempt removal tomorrow

can anyone help me with installing distributor as that is the thing I think is gonna get me. I hear you have to rotate engine until 1 cycling is at the top and ensure you are not on exhaust stroke

I cleaned the manifold and bought new impeller and distributor cap

am going to try to change the ring gear too as one tooth is damaged, main worry is getting distributor rotation correct

thanks again for the help

He is in Central Kentucky . If you get on Craigslist under Lexington Ky. and search for "Volvo Harrodsburg" in the BOATS section I'm sure his add will come up .

engine is back in the boat, next job is connecting all pipes etc, I pulled them out a little too quick without labeling them

its has its own water cooling so want to make sure I don't connect anything wrong, then its down to the timing. engine was supplied at TDC so am hoping if I put distributor on correctly it will fire right up and just need timing adjusted, will soon find out

too a trip to NYC in between work, thats why its taken so long

hope to have it done in the next few days assuming I have not messed anything up, had to replace some bolts and studs from original engine but most things seemed to go on OK

update to follow soon with joy or doom lol
