no you only need separate rags as when on the color it will let out some color to the rag and you do not want any contaminant color getting to your white gelcoat.
if you are a dull color but no white haze OX, you could still most likely benefit from a good deep cleaning with soap and water. Then a light hit with a compound to knock any build ups off and flatten the surface. Next a double pass of polish followed with 2 coats of a nice top wax and you should be better than you are now. Remember slow speeds, overlapping passes, work small areas at a time, DO NOT let the compounds or polish dry., Make sure that the wax has time to dry. And always start with a perfectly clean and dry surface. Work with small 4sqft areas at a time aka the width of your shoulders and the height of your torso ASSUMING that you are not Shaquille Oneal.
Your shine comes from the HYDRATION and oils in the gelcoat, combined with the surface being perfectly flat. you may need to use an oil like the number 7 glaze to rejuvenate the surface. But i feel if you use the 3 products that i outlined previously and in that order you will be happy. The compound is light and will get you to the gloss that you want. I cannot guarantee that you will get were i am but it will be better than where you are now. Technique is a huge part of the final results.
