Gents,

Recently I noticed a mist coming from Starboard engine sea water pump at speed. This mist was coming from the front end pulley and it was creating corrosion. I went ahead and ordered the Hardin Marine stainless pump which uses he back of the stock pump and replaced it.

My engines temperature gauges ran at 175 or halfway up during all operations. Both ran at the same temps. Now since the replacement of the pump, the temp gauge will not go above 125. Is this normal? Does that mean the other engine is running a bit high and I should consider changing that impeller?Imagefree photo hosting

My guess is something holding the thermostat open limiting the temp to 125 F.

I agree with the last post... Mine run at 175.

Often its a sticky thermostat, or a piece of sand or rust flake keeping the stat from closing. Mine runs between 160-170 or so.

That's exactly what happened to my thermostat. I just removed it and cleaned it out. It's been working perfectly all summer since it was cleaned.

Ok here is the quick n easy way to deal with this as long us it's not a sticky stat. Get the engine up to temp by running it on plsne for a while becsuse that will probably get it open all the way. Then when you bring it to idle take a small hammer and lightly tap the thermo housing. The vibrations can jar loose a rust flake or sand without having to take it apart. I've done this in salt water a few times ....

Personally...I would turn the few bolts and swap out the thermostat....its a simple job, cheap part to replace and you can inspect the inside of the housing.

I would be afraid of the tap method dislodging a rust flake, which then travels and stops up a port you can't access then you have restricted flow and overheating.

The therm swap is a 1 beer in the shade job with easy access.
