Does the engine crank at normal speed on parallel? If it cranks slower than normal you could have weak batteries or bad wiring that is not delivering enough amperage.
If it only cranks in the parallel position, it kind of sounds like it could be a bad selector switch. If the engine battery or house battery will not crank at all individually but do fine together, that would indicate that the switch is only making contact in the "parallel" position. Use a volt meter to check for power at the various settings.
The battery selector switch panel can be accessed by removing 4 screws. It may help to work the wiring harness a little to help access the back side of the switch panel.
