Gents,

I have seen other 288 engine hatch pictures with a black seal around it. My 288 does not have one and as a result, the generator control box has corroded beyond repair. The water falls through the corner of the hatch on starboard side right over gen control box. On port side, straight over the ignition coil. I also replaced that.
Does anyone have a seal or any ideas to seal the hatch so water doea not drip in when we wash the boat?

The engine hatch is designed to let water pass, and the water is to be caught by the drip rail under the hatc, and drain into the scuppers on either side.

I noticed that the scuppers were the problem as they could not handle much flow at all. The problem is the grate / screen over the scuppers restricts the water. All the sand, crumbs and hair from the floor that make its way down there make things worse.

My solution was to remove the screens by sticking a small screwdriver into one of the holes and spin it out.

I find I get far less water in the bilge area since doing this.

Good Luck.

The factory seal on the engine compartment of my 278 is a basic draughtproofing seal, as standard, a double P seal (unsplit), It does work very well, in particular as far as noise is concerned. I changed parts of mine to a double D seal. I'll change all of it tomorrow as the adhesion has given up. The 278 has a drain channel around where the engine lit fits with an outlet not into the bilge ! Such a seal is about £5.00, USD 6 !
