I recently purchased a 1997 278. The steering won't move. I'm assuming I need to replace the steering cable? If so, anyone know which one I need and have a link to instructions on replacement?

Hmmmmmm. Interesting. Will I be able to see the problem if I just pull the steering wheel off.

You can just pull the rubber boot back and see it if you have a tilt steering wheel.

I do have a tilt wheel. I pulled the rubber back but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I'm thinking I should disconnect the cable from the hydraulic unit at the transom and see if it turns then. I remember seeing a diagram with a how-to on doing that, but can't find it now. And I'm not sure if I have to unbolt the hydraulic unit from the transom in order to get the cable out. With the 7.4, it might be a tight squeeze working back there.

When I pulled my rubber boot back I saw nothing either. But when my mechanic took it apart he found the broken bolt in the bottom of the tilt mech. It was jammed in there so the wheel wouldn't budge at all. Do you have any play in your wheel at all?

Yes, a little. Maybe 45 -60 degrees. It actually seemed like it felt like it jumped a gear when giving pressure.

Ok, so probably not the same problem, mine wouldn't budge.
