Yeah what he said, also check the cables on the outdrive with the trim up. I had a NEW cable fray and punch a hole in a bellow letting water inside the guts of the outdrive.

 That is all a bit much for me. I am a do it yourselfer, but some things are best left to the pro's. It's good info to know, so I can ask questions when I take it in for service, but this isn't the kind of stuff I want to spend my time doing. Don't get me wrong I am greatful for the info.

David

I have friend at work that got a yamaha 23 footer a few weeks before me and slips his boat. He's taking it out to do other work and called Phil Dill to inquire about taking it in for the 20 hour service. They told him $420.00 to change oil and plugs and check stuff.

I learned about annual greasing of the gimbal the hard way. Make sure you grease at least once a season or not only will the boat be growling but you'll be growling when you write that check. Another "been there done that", Water pump impeller... this item needs replacement once every season to be on the safe side, Don't wait too much longer or your dead on the water.

The gimble and u-joints are part of the regular maintenance that I/Os need, that's what OB guys are talking about when they say that the power transmission in an OB is simpler, because there are no u-joints and gimble to worry about. The driveshaft passes thru the transom shield (what your out drive is bolted to) and the gimble bearing supports the driveshaft as it goes into the engine coupler. The u-joints are what allows an I/O to tilt and they need to be greased yearly with a good quality wheel bearing grease, same with the gimble. Some newer drives have something called perma lube joints which do not need greasing. I prefer the old style ones were you can see the new grease force out the old. When greasing the gimble, it is good to do it with the drive off as you can see the grease coming out and spin the bearing with your fingers to make sure the grease gets to all the rollers. Most important about the 20 hr service is to make sure the bellows does not leak water and the input shaft bearing in the drive does not leak gear oil. Both will cost you big time if they are bad.

Volvo drives built since ~2003 use permanently lubed (non-greasable) u-joints. Graham might be able to provide a more specific time when that started.

Best way to grease the gimbal is to do it with the engine running IMO.

I've been trying to follow the manual for my break-in time as far as continually varying my rpm's not running WOT for more than 2 min at a time etc., but yesterday I just couldn't take it anymore (I'm at 12 + hours) and I ran around the lake in some medium chop at WOT for a pretty good bit and multiple times. I gave her a pretty good workout. Had 3 people in the boat, 2 coolers and all our stuff and really had no problem reaching 58 mph on the speedo. Just below the double lines on the trim seems to be my sweet spot for high speed.

I know Merc says no WOT up til 10 hrs, then no sustained WOT until 20 hrs, varying throttle for the duration. I know I had mine WOT on the test drive a few times. I couldn't imagine sustaining WOT for more than a minute or two on any water! Then again, most lakes I am on are only about 5 miles in length.

I was thinking Lake O for Memorial day weekend. My sis's place is at the 60. I can cruise up to Warsaw (88 mm) for some wicked smooth water, then back to Big Dick's (45 mm) for a minnow shot and dinner over the weekend to show off the CC exhaust! ...That is, once I get my break-in done.

Smithville's only a short stretch of open water. You see nearly half of that in my vid.

 Smooth water on LOTO on a holiday weekend, FUNNY. Make sure your bilge pump works and you have towels to dry off with. Make sure you get right next to shore to show off that exhaust, if not about 40 twin big block 100k+ go fast boats that cruise the lake all weekend will drowned you out.

This is all really great info. Thank you very much all. I will be taking it to the dealer for the 20 hour service for a couple of reasons. This is my first boat and I am really not all that familiar with all of these things. When it comes back I will double check using cougars list. Second, should I have any troubles down the road I don't want their to be any reason for them to point the finger back at me. I would have never known to ask about the engine alignment and I certianly will after this. You guys are great, thanks again for all the suggestions.

David

Same here! And second the the very appreciative and deserved Thank You! :D
