I have just purchased a 2006 Vista 228 with 5 LTR motors with only 150 hrs on it. The mechanic has told me those pumps are very unreliable and should be replaced. this seems to be very few hours for replacement. There are no obvious issues at present.
Anyone have any history with this?

We replaced the fuel pump on our 268 with a 5.7Gi engine several years ago, and we have run it several years since then without fuel pump issues. I do not recall how many hours it had when we changed it, but I would guess maybe 800. I am pretty sure we have put at least that many hours on it since then. There are other threads on this site about these fuel pumps over the last 15-20 years. Fuel contamination, corrosion, and peeling paint inside the pump housing have caused issues. In addition to pump failure, another symptom is a whining noise which indicates restrictions and upcoming failure. The pump assembly can be replaced a shop or by a person with reasonable mechanical ability. The pump assembly is mounted on the right front corner of the engine. The assembly includes a low pressure pump, a high pressure pump, a filter, and a cooling system. The fuel system is sensitive to air in the lines. Any time the filter is changed, the pump is changed, or lines are disconnected, the system needs to be primed by turning the key on, listening for the beeps, turn the key off, and repeat. This may be as many as 5 - 10 times before trying to start. Overall, they are good engines. They are the General Motors/Chevy small block 5.0 liter or 5.7 liter (305 or 350 cubic inch) engines. Some of the same issues with Volvo engines are also found with Mercruiser engines. Have fun with your boat!!!!

Just wanted to point out there are other fuel system issues that will show up as fuel starvation even if the pumps are good:
Anti siphon valve
Fuel pick up tube
Fuel tank vent

If yours are functioning well I don’t think I’d jump to replace them as of yet. However if you do run into a problem with low max rpm, engine cant plane off the boat, stalling etc, first these 3 things should be checked. Another good diagnostic procedure is temporarily run the boat on an outboard tank. This isolates the engine fuel system from the boat fuel system. It’s not uncommon for anti siphon valves to get stuck or corroded inside, the pick up tube can have a screen that can get clogged by debris in the tank and insects can build nests that clog fuel tank vents….
