Amazingly someone has thought of this - there's a wireless remote switch here for about $170: http://www.bobsmachine.com/Products/wirelessJackPlate.cfm

Hi guys. I know I'm a little late to chime in on this one, but I have this on my boat. I have a Volvo engine, and my dealer couldn't find the parts through VP, so they installed the Merc one. It's black, and it's very small, about half the size of a deck of cards. It works well. No issue with compatability.

It's very handy for me, because I trailer the boat a lot, and need to trim the motor down to make the boat fit in my garage, so it's invaluable. I mounted it opposite the H200 logo on the back, below the sunpad and above the swim platform. I have a thing for symmetry! Anyway, it was well worth what they charged me, which I think was about $60 for the parts, and another $75 or so for labour.

Do you know if the dealer was able to plug it right in or if they had to splice the wires? If it's plug and play I'm ordering one today for my 225....

Sounded like 230 Mike was saying splicing would be needed if even you bought the Volvo tilt switch. It's only three wires.

I don't know what happened with that. The VP part comes with a pigtail and a connector on the end, as though there should be a mating connector somewhere in the area. I don't know if my dealer just couldn't find that connector or what, but they wound up cutting the connector off of the pigtail and splicing the bare wires into the appropriate part of the harness. I've always felt there was more to that story, but I can't say for sure.

The only thing special about the VP switch (other than the fact that it's a waterproof membrane style switch, which is kind of cool), is that it has a 3rd position which I think is for the "trailer position" - which I also don't understand but may be a European thing. It does nothing in my installation.

My transom switch won't arrive until Monday. As I'm hoping to complete my current projects and splash the boat this weekend, I may have to put this one off. Too bad it'd be nice to get this done now while the boat's all torn apart. :(

I have no idea if they spliced in of it it plugged in. I know it was really simple though. The tech at my Marina is pretty good, and he does stuff like that in his sleep. My sales rep asked him if the merc switch would work with the VP, and he laughed. It's just a switch. Why wouldn't it work? Anyway, it works. It's totally variable just like the one on the throttle. You have to hold it and you can move it up or down as much or as little as you like, through the whole range of the hydraulics. It's perfect. It is of course water proof.

jjker, do you have the P/N ? I want to put one in & have done exstensive web search. Cannot find a Merc P/N. I know from another board just to use an on-off-on rocker switch that defaults back to off always

OK, the part number is 87-815200A02.

I can't remember the exact details, but it was about $150-$160 installed, and I have it at the back under the sunpad and above the swim platform, on the same fibreglass that the ski-tow hook is in. It looks fine there.

I'll take some pics of the boat this weekend...

Mike,

That 3rd button is something to do with overriding the electronic trim limiter fitted to some DPS drives. That works in conjunction with the 3 wire trim sender, something else to go wrong ( the insulation on the 3rd wire is renowned for fracturing apparently!).

Forecast 5 mph winds tomorrow, sunny, first day on the boat since it was launched a month ago ( forecast probably changes aty Midnight, but I'm going anyway!).

Regards,

Graham

Thanks, Graham. I think you've explained that to me before but every time somebody brings this up I've forgotten it again. I think it's because I'm old...
