OK, good info; I knew the grill hole centers were close to stock, but wasn't sure if they were identical.

I think the reason your thoughts fell on deaf ears is that Ongaro seems to just be a packager of others' existing products. These horns are stamped "TCO" as a maker and "Taiwan" (embossed into the stainless). Then they have a clear adhesive label stuck on them saying "Ongaro Marine."

Guess I don't need to think about it for a few days.

Ongaro has since replied back that they will forward on my suggestions, and the fiam cutout I attached to their product marketing group. Who knows? Maybe we'll see a mounting bezel or optional larger faceplate next year.

I've also got a call into Fiamm to ask about a 519 series with a low pitch, in an attempt to get a dual horn sound by adding a matching 519 series horn to the starboard side of the bow, leaving the existing high pitch 519 series horn in place.

Great idea! I still don't know if I can bring myself to take hole saw to hull, but perhaps if I start steeling myself for it now I can do it by next season .

An engineer at Fiam says that they have a dual tone horn that uses the same bracket and cover plate as the 519 series, but must be installed from the inside of the hull. I'm still trying to get details.

Well, I understand now that the mounting bracket may need to be changed, and the new one installed from inside the hull. It's Fiam p/n 7222321.

From what I understand, this one uses the same type of horn we have as stock for the low tone, then another that has an adjustable tone for the high pitch. (The high pitch horn is set and the adjustment screw siliconed at the factory). Another SS faceplate is also included. The drawing indicates the dual tone horn is rated at 110 db,- guess that db's are not cumulative, in that adding a second horn does not double the db's.

I ordered one up from a local distributor that Fiam recommended. $38 plus shipping. If it works out I'll pass on contact info.

I'm actually glad that it comes with another faceplate. If for any reason the direct swap goes sour, I can do a fresh install on the starboard side of the boat. Wonder what db level the stock plus a dual would equate to?

Just as an FYI - as far as dB sound levels from the horn, it is a logarithmic measurement. An increase of 3dB is actually double the sound level. 110dB is fairly loud.., but 113dB will be double that loudness.

I think no hole cutting will be required as both use the same SS faceplate. True, the 519 calls for two 2.5" holes 1.5" apart, and the dual calls for two 2.25" holes 1.75" apart, but the press in nuts are aligned with the 10-24 thru bolts from the faceplate, so it should all be a wash. The difference in hole 'height', and the need to clean up the area between the holes is to accomodate mounting (read dropping in) the single horn from the outside. The dual can avoid the larger diameter holes and clean up between, because they are mounted from the inside of the hull. I don't know if your 230H has the access through the anchor locker that my 200H has.



I took the horn pics I posted from that rectangular hole. That may be the area where some discreet cutting could be needed. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure the cutout I have in my anchor locker will be big enough. Could be some brainstorming will be required here. Maybe assemble the horns to the u bracket reaching through the hull from the outside, connect the wires, 4200 the horn bracket into place, then secure by mounting the faceplate. I dunno.
