I'm looking at purchasing a '03 298. The drives are SX. What is the peformance/handling difference with the DuoProp and SX models? Should this influence my decision to purchase the boat? I currently have a '04 268 with 5.7 Gi/DuoProp.

I assume when you say drives you mean there are twin motors? I would think the duoprops would help with straight line acceleration (ie. hole shot) other than that I do not know of any other advantages in a twin setup. One advantage of the SX drives is that the props are cheap compared to the duoprops. Somebody with more knowledge of twin setups should pipe in here though.

On this boat, with twin engines, the duo-props would give you better fuel mileage, quicker planing and lower minimum planing speed. The advantges of better close-quarters steering control will be not as great as if it was a single engine.

With this said, if the price is advantageous on the SX boat, compared to a DP boat, and you are fine with the compromise in price vs benefits of DP drives ........ then go for it.

I agree with M3. If the price is right, that boat will be fine with the SX drives.

The 298 is not much of a jump in size from your 268. The added beam is nice, but you have less than twice the room and twice the maintenance cost as your 268. We considered a 298 a few years ago, but did not feel it was worth the added cost for that minimal difference. But if it works for you, that's good.
