Throttle Cable Lubrication

Has anyone ever tried to lube the throttle cable? Can it be done or is it time to replace the cable?

Are you sure it needs it? Maybe the tension in the shifter needs adjusted?

I have a 2001 7.4 Gi and I find the throttle cable is very stiff. It's almost like the the throttle is "on" or "off". It is very difficult to "feather" throttle and maintain a nice cruising speed. The boat is fairly new to me so I have not had time to check this out. I intend on removing the cable from the throttle boddy and trying it to see if that removes restriction so I will know if the problem is cable forward or back. I did notice that there is a pretty funky linkage at the throttle body that could be binding also. I think you need to just start playing around until you have isolated the problem. I would think that a good shot of jigaloo or pb blaster wouldn't hurt though!

Is there some kind of spring in the back of the shifter? I guess I may have to pull the shifter off and look at it if the cable appears to be bad. Do you have an exploded view available?

There was a thread about 2 years ago titled "Shifter tension adjustment". It includes a link to a VP manual showing how to adjust it and instructions.

I loosened the screw that adjusts the resistance (pinches with two plastic plates) on the throttle cable a little bit last summer. I was afraid to lossen it too much for the fear that the throttle would slip as when cruising along.

However, there are mechanical and safety issues to consider when adjusting the tension. Too tight is annoying, but too loose can have serious consequences. Adjust with caution.

And, it's always possible that the cable just needs replaced :lol:

Try detaching the cable from the throttle assembly. Then, without the cable attached, see if the throttle operates smoothly. If it doesn't, you may have isolated the problem to the throttle itself.
You could also disconnect the cable at the other end just to see of the cable moves freely by itself.
Just a suggestion.

OK, so I ordered a new throttle cable and the dealer said that I should replace the shift cable while I was in there. Both cables together cost about $70 so I thought what the heck. Yesterday I took a look at the throttle cable and that seems pretty straight forward. However, the shift cable (the end near the rear of the engine) looks like it goes inside of a larger rubber hose and through the tansom. Does this cable run from the throttle/shift lever all the way into the upper part of the outdrive? One end of the cable has a cotter pin connection and the other is threaded with a nut. I'm guessing that if I can replace it, I sure better be carful so the the cable is the adjusted to the same length so that it goes in and out of forward and reverse when I need it .

The cable does run all the way to the outdrive. The outer cable is retained in the outdrive, the bolt holding the retainer in place is accessed from the starboard side. It doesn't need to be removed completely, it just needs to be slackened enough so the retainer can be slid outwards, away from the cable. You basically then need to have the shifter lever in neutral and adjust the bronze "Cube nut" position on the threaded end of the cable at the outdrive so that the piece that takes the split pin/ washer lies in the middle of the actuator lever slot. If you can't get enough adjustment to allow that, you'll need to readjust the cable at the shifter.

All the moving parts benefit from the application of waterproof grease. Also, I'd recommend you remove the rubber seals from the old cables; they are very easy to lose when the outdrive is removed, so it's good to have them as spares!

I have a 06 255 Sundowner with 5.7l DP. It has the volvo Penta shifter. I need to know how to adjust the friction as well. I pulled the smaller cover, but I did not find the gold colored adjustment screw. And the manual is vauge. I have the kill switch attached to the cover plate too.

If you pull the black cover (about 2" tall x 3" long) to the aft of the shift handle there are a few holes in the black plastic. About 3" in from one of the holes is a philips screw that tightens or loosens this thing that pinches the throttle cable. If I get down to the boat this weekend I'll take a picture.
