A decent portion of the paint on the lower portion of my outdrive is gone. What remains appears to me is a primed surface.

I have caught some references to painting the outdrive on the forum but nothing in detail.

Anyone have experience out there they would like to share?

Outdrive is 2000 Silver Volvo SX.

Thanks.

Doing it right is an involved process. I can get the steps out my Volvo shop manual if you'd like, but my vote would be to have it done professionally.

I painted my outdrive last year. It's not real complicated, nor expensive. But, it is time consuming.

My library has the shop manual. I did not realize it was in there.

I'll pull it out and take a look. Thanks.

It can be done by the DIY without too much hassle, and it can be done on the boat, just mask off the area around it to avoid overspray. Scuff it down nicely, clean it off with either acetone or some time of wax and grease remover. Hit it with a zinc chromate primer and then you can paint directly over that if you use the volvo paint in a can. Evinrude/Johnson makes a SX silver but it does not exactly match the Volvo paint. 2 cans of spray paint and 1 can of primer are more than enough to do the drive. And most importantly is DO NOT prime or paint the anodes.

There's a lot of detail in the Volve Sterndrive Operators Manual that comes with the boat new (mine is on page 114) - you can always download this from the Volvo Web site or mabe even the FW website. The way Volvo describe the paining in this manual is fairly involved - apparently the SX and DP-S drives use a silicon-alloy aluminum casting process, and this process requires a "unique" paint repair procedure.

Matt,

I just refinished mine. I can find agreement with all the previous posts. If you want it to look like new, get it done professionally. If you can live with a little imperfection, do it yourself using the proper methods and materials. I chose the latter and I'm very happy with it. Is it showroom condition? No. Does it look good? Sure. My additional tips would be to remove the old decals and order more from your dealer. You'll need the drive ID # and they'll handle the rest. Also, even though the silver paint I used had the words "Volvo Drive" on it, it was not the right color silver. It was more army grey which is a brighter grey and no metallic flake. If the cap on the paint can doesn't look right, ask them to try again.

The test for me will be next fall after a season of use. If the paint comes off that quickly or corrosion sets back in, then it was a waste of time. If it lasts a couple seasons then...

Hope this helps.

There are 3 different part numbers for Volvo gray spray paint. Naturally, mine was the 3rd.

I bought the outdrive paint from http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/paint.htm
It was Volvo paint and an exact match, cheaper than from a dealer too.

Not as nice as if a pro did it, but not too bad for my first try.

It does look good. What color did you go with on the outdrive touch-up paint, Blue-Grey or Grey DPX, DPS (if either)? Thanks.
