Another improvement to the sealing could be if it was redesigned so there was no water passage cutouts in the gasket, but an external connection so water went into the manifold and then on to the riser via that external connection.

Actually I think Mercruiser has done this, they call it the dry joint system, the water is routed to the risers without having to go thru the passage where the exhaust gases come out.

Which way does the Manifold gasket go? Writing towards the Block or Manifold? When I removed the Manifolds, the gasket was stuck to the Manifolds. I would like to keep it that way. I don't want to be leaning over the engine for an hour scraping the gasket off, I'd rather do it on the bench!!!!!!

Jeff,

Bits of mine were stuck to the manifolds and the cylinder heads. The VP manifold gasket is symmetrical; it doesn't matter which way it is fitted ( if there is any writing on it, it's only from the original blank from which it was stamped. I gave everything a light spray of silicone, it might make it simpler to remove the gaskets in future, with no effect on sealing performance)

Thanks Graham, I didn't know if one side had any heat activated sealer to adhere it to the surface. The side with writing is smooth, and the other side has a texture look to it, maybe the adhesive side?? Don't know, just asking.

Jeff,

I'd be very surprised if they use an adhesive layer; the smooth side is probably so writing could be put on it.
