I have been told that I cannot register my trailer for my 245 sundowner in victoria as it is to wide and i would need to change the hydraulic brake system to electric brake system. Can anybody confirm this before I ring vicroads.
Thanks

Kyp, in Victoria the max overall width is 2.5m, and above 2000kg does require other than over-ride brakes - electric, vacuum etc. Also in Victoria, the total towing weight cannot exceed 1.5 times the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (so you'll need something a reasonable size to tow with - your average Hyundai Excel will not be legal!).

Maybe talk to Fleet Marine as they tow these all the time from the docks to their showroom with a Land Cruiser - they will know how to get around this problem! You can get a wide load permit for the width, but the brakes will be your main problem.

Of course, as you would expect, the regulations are different in each state... :?

Kyp, we have the same issues in QLD, I had to go to the police department and they gave me a letter (for free ) Excess dimension permit, i had to have this to get it registered. the catch is it is a condition of the permit to have oversize signs and also flashing lights. i did use them for a while.... nobody else seems to do it. I guess i will regret that comment if i ever have an accident....

Hey Kyp, how are you going with your repair? Check out the following - could this be related to your problem?

Hey Alec I rang up James about the recall because my pictures looked similar to the damadge of the recalled ones but he said they had stopped making the XDP drives. He also said I should be getting the boat back within 2 weeks so i am very happy about that. Cant wait to get back out on the water again after 2 months of not having the boat. Hopefully there is still more warm days to come.

Hi Guys, I need some advice on my trailer. Its a 98 model, single axle, hydraulic drums. The brakes have been butchered by someone who added a cable operated handbrake mechanism, supposedly to "australianise" the trailer. They cut holes in the backing plates and fitted a hinged piece of metal that jams itself against one brake pad when applied. The whole lot is now rusted beyond repair. I had to disconnect the brakes because they would apply but wouldn't release, now my rego is due and I need a pinkslip, there is no way it will pass in its current condition.

Ideally I would like to fit mechanical disc brakes, I have had a trailer repairer look at it who wants to remove the four winns axle and replace the lot with leaf springs, new axle etc for "about $750" I also rang the four winns dealer at Mona vale who quoted me $2500 in parts to convert to hydraulic discs (+ labour on top). He then suggested a new trailer might be the cheaper option.

Have any of you done this mod before? Is there anybody you can recommend to do the conversion (preferably in Sydney) I am quite happy to spend the $750 but would prefer to keep the original swing arm axle. The $2500+ option is out of the question, I would rather replace the whole trailer.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Connor.

Hi Connor,

First price of around $750 sounds about right. Check out the following web site to get an idea of costs of the parts to help you better decide:

http://www.etrailerparts.com.au/

Check out the section "Axle Setups - Brake" for the various options available. Yep, for $2500 you could definately buy a new trailer!

Hopefully this helps you decide which way to go....
