My generator in the 318 looks like this. No other covers or shields to my knowledge.

Image

Logs of chatter that parts are hard to get to and what not.

What is difficult?

I don't think mine has the sound shield. That's the major casing on it. Should I have had the sound shield?

Hey Coug

If your looks like that, then you dont have a sound shield. Is a sound shield and option? I havent seen it as an option.

When I put the genny in our 268 I had 2 used ones to pick from, a Kohler with a sound shield or a Westerbeke without a sound shield. I opted for the Westerbeke because it is an 1800 rpm genny and the Kohler is a 3600 rpm... we have had ours running all night, its a nice hum, nothing annoying....

What is the noise like in the aft berth(cabin)

Nevertheless, the Kohler unit is a popular genny so I cant imagine its too loud.

Mine has the sound shield and the electronics mounted on it are not nearly as fancy. What makeS servicing it a pain in the "arse" is where FW put it in the 288. It is tucked into the starboard rear corner in the engine space. The raw water pump is on the right side of the unIt which put is way back in the corner. For me to really reach it I have to remove the left side exhaust elbow of my starboard engine. Pisses me off, yes, but it forces me to remove my exhaust elbow fairly routinely and I use the opportunity to inspect.

You definitely don't have the sound shield and that strikes me as odd since Kohler makes them and the boat you have came with almost every conceivable option on it (if you even want to call it an option, that is). My 298 Vista's Kohler came with a sound shield but it is a 2000 model and Kholer makes them much quieter now so maybe Four Winns doesn't see the necessity. I am curious as to what the newer boat owners say about the shield. IMHO, I would have expected one to come with your boat. Check your specs sheet/window sticker and see if it mentions the shield.

I thought I remember seeing something about the sound shield, but it's not on the invoice or sticker for the boat -- so apparently, they are sly about that.

It's not loud at all - so I think they probably decided it wasn't needed. I'll keep searching though.

Thanks for the input... Sounds like are some boats it's used, some it is not.

My 358 came with the sound shield and I am glad it's there. It does make a difference. Our last boat didn't have it and it was much louder.

My 2000 328 viista came from the factory with a sound shield. It makes a difference. Some one said the sound shield was about a $600.00 option, But I can not confirm that. PS, its a kohler 5KW. I also have freinds with a formula, and sea-ray that dont have a sound shield.

my 2008 v358 has a sound shield, it was not an option, but include with the genny option.

Two possibilties, they don't offer it on the 318 for cost reasons or for space reasons.

There might not be enough room for the shield or enough room to get it off and service the genny.

I'm thinking you SHOULD have a sound shield, it's not a separate option on the build sheet, it's only an option if you buy a genset yourself.

*shrugs*

Our 318 doesn't have a sound shield either but I haven't found the noise to be a problem. We only realy use it when we are moving or sitting and playing for a while. At night we have only stayed at a marine sound it isn't an issue.

Cougar, I have a 288 and it doesnt have a sound shield. I noticed that jvalich also has a 288 and has the sound shield, so maybe they have stopped using/supplying it.

I think they use it on the larger Vistas, but not on the 288/318. It is by no means 'needed' - but it wouldn't suck to have it'

My 348 came with a cover on the generator. Not sure if it actually helps with the sound. I never use it anyway. I have to try to remember to start it up every few weeks to keep it in good operating order.
