Downfall is, they weren't going to use the material I wanted

What were they going to use? Or more specifically, What should I ask for ? I have checked with some local sign shops for my registration numbers but I don't know if there is a specific vinyl to ask for.

There are 2 grades of vinyl that I know of. The sign shops call it a 3 year product and a 7 year product. I always go for the premium one, its thicker and holds up better to UV. I dont think its that much more than the other. Then you have to deciede if you want reflective in it or not. Alot of more complicated stuff can be printed on the material, so you can have multiple colors in 1 material thickness, but if you want any reflective you will have to stack that on.

Just letting you know my shop in Michigan can print this and put a clear laminate over it for durability. I can ship it to you all for $100 including the port location.

The double stacking can be a pain but if you use "high performance" it should last a long time and definitely longer than anything printed. The silver metalic will also be much "brighter" than the printed silver BUT the printed decal will be easier to install.

With any vinyl that is in the sun you will get fading, however as with everything, you get what you pay for. I have seen many people settle for the "calender grade" or "intermeadiate" vinyl and have good luck with it for years, however the 7 year plus or "high performance" vinyl has the durability that is 100 times better.

Let me know if I can help.

anybody know of a good sign shop that is worth recommending?

A local sign shop here quoted me like 275 bucks for a boat name & hailing port that measured 11 inches tall X 33 inches wide. Seems kind of steep to me... Although - it's not possible for the normal BoatUS or Overtons route because of the lettering and graphic style.

I have used this guy 3 times. He has done reg. numbers for me on two different boats and also did the boat name for me. He is very reasonable...you just have to install yourself. What you saw above in my post cost me $20.00 and it was 3 inch by about 25 inch long. He does good work, cheap, and ships fast.

I checked with these guys and they wanted less than 100 bucks to do it. Downfall is, they weren't going to use the material I wanted and it was going to be a multiple layer application.

Any recommendations for a custom sign shop that can do a 1 peice layout for me (except the hailing port). It's pretty basic -- black and silver. Preferably metallic/reflective in nature.

Layout looks like
