I just mounted mine on the dash, on the left side. I used a Ram mount, that points almost forward. It sits just above the gauges on the left side. I have several inches clearance top and bottom.

Mike:
I was going to give you a compliment about you having such a nice lawn in your house…….
We all know that is where you boat…

My lawn used to look that nice, before I owned a boat.

I love the RAM suction cup mount on the windshield. I know that isn't what you're asking for. Perfect positioning (for me at least) and look ma, no holes.

Mike - the suction cup stays put even with all the pounding, shaking etc? I just bought a new suction cup as my old one started losing its grip and falling off the car windshield once in a while. I think the boat takes a harder pounding than the car.

This one would break the windshield before coming loose, if it didn't have the release mechanism on it. Is yours a RAM mount?

I've never taken it off since I first installed it. Bounced around on the lakes, went down many highways on the trailer, sat over a long, frozen winter, etc. Never a problem.

The one I just bought is a RAM mount with the twist lock. I should be good to go!

Thanks Mike.

I just bought a Lowrance Elite-4m HD Chartplotter Gold with 4.3" display (only $200) and am looking for more mounting options. I am thinking about using a RAM mount clamp on the windshield support. What have you guys done?

I know I am quoting myself but I just did a mock up of where I think I am going to install it. There is more room on the starboard side than I originally thought:

The old boats have a nice big flat area in front of the instrument panel to mount stuff. I have my Garmin 441S there with my Sirius antenna. Once you've had a nice GPS its a beautiful thing. Here we have the coastal charts so its nice to be able to see the mean low water depths for the area you are heading into. Still have a paper chart on the boat just in case....

This is a case where the flat dash area would be nice. Also, paper charts do come in handy. Using the app on the phone was a cheap alternative but there is nothing like having a dedicated device that does what it is supposed to do.
