Hello forum memebers, I am a new member to ifourwinns and have found the site very informative. I have recently acquired a 1998 Sundowner 205 with the 5.0 liter GL. The motor runs well and is supposed to run oil pressure between 30 and 60 psi. However the oil pressure gauge does not have any psi numbers just 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 marks. When warmed up (145-165 F) the oil pressure reads approximately 1/3 at idle and 3/4 at 3500-4000 rpm. I have read one other forum members post (4.3 liter) who also found oil pressure to range faily wide (as compared to a car).

:?: Is this range of oil pressure readings normal for this motor? Anyone else with the same motor/similar vintage getting similar oil pressure readings?

The oil pressure sounds fine.

Derrick,

Small block Chev runs as low as 15psi hot oil pressure at idle, and about 45psi >2500rpm using a 30W oil and stock oil pump. So to me, it seems your gauge probably reads 0-60psi, and 1/3 at idle is fine, and 3/4 is about 45psi which is fine also. So all looks to be perfectly in order to me - would not sweat it at all.

Thanks Gordon and Alec for the replies! I'll breath easier the next time out and just keep an eye open for any oil pressure readings beyond what I am getting now.

Mine does the same thing. I've owned it for 4 years now. However, I changed to synthetic oil two years ago and it seems like the engine feels better. Don't ask me how I can tell, it just feels that way. Not scientific at all.
