Volvo vs. Volvo, that 5.7 is putting out more than 280 and it's been that way for years... They are now rated at 300 and didn't make any changes.. As for room, there will be no gain in room in the bilge. If I had my choice it would be the 350 every time... The 305 developed the "Dog Motor" history in the auto world, for a reason.

But as you said, for some uses, it's enough..

Yes, you're correct about the bilge room, I was mistaken. 305 and 350 have the same exterior dimensions (provided everything else (outdrive, exhaust, etc) bolts up the same). I still can't justify $1200.00 for such minor differences. But ... to each his own.

Now ... when my 305 bites it, I will likely go back with a 350 simply because, dollar for dollar, I can build a 350 cheaper than a 305 and have more options in the way of performance mods, if I so choose.

I'm one of those "too much, is just right" guys... I wish my 248 had a 496 Mag in it... That's the ONLY thing I miss from my last boat :)

I hear that! My new 268 has the same engine/drive package as my 225 did....definatly NOT the same performance.

Didn't you have thru hull exhaust on the stingray too ?

This must be a typo, or you had one too many root beers. Despite the same engine/OD combination, your 268 will NEVER have the same performance as your 225 Sundowner. Except maybe at idle. Just thought you should know.

Wow...talk about a typo. It'd be great if it would perform the same, but thats like comparing an Explorer to an F350...

Sure did, and LOVED it.. And unlike most people, on a 496 Magnum, Thru Hulls DO provide a performance increase at WOT, to the tune of 1-2 MPH... And cooler engine temps. :)

I wouldn't want thru hulls on a cruiser, but 375 prop horsepower and 515Lbs/Ft of torque wouldn't be bad....

Yet, you see sooooo many guys out there that think an Explorer can tow anything.

My 2 cents on the motor thing, 5.0L bad, 5.7L ok, 8.1L great.

Ok Boy's that's enough. I have a 320 horse power 268 and it will get up and go but the best spead is at about 30 to 32 mph. I had it up to 45 and that's good enough for me. I agree, if I wanted a boat to fly around with, I would drive my daughters boyfriends boat that is a 23' through hall exhaust with a 454 motor in it with a holly dual line double pumper and an oversized cam. It does about 70. When I had my 69 Z-28 Comaro years ago I would have loved that but now, it is all about comfort and style. That's why I own a Four Winns Boat.

By the way if you think you are going to tow a 248 or bigger with an explorer, you will be in for the experience of your life.

You could have the big block and still have the same comfort/style. Big blocks work less to do the same amount of work as the small block. My 496 would cruise at way less RPM than my 5.7 does, and it was as easy on gass (if not a little better) than my 5.7, assuming I kept my hand off the throttle :)

Agreed, and the same goes for towing a 268 with a Durango.

If torque, smooth cruising and fuel efficiency is what you seek, you could always drop in a diesel ...

A forum member here uses a Yukon Denali to tow his 258.... My gen 2 Durango is QUITE a bit more stout than the first generation ones. I'd be scared towing my old 225 with my old '99 Durango...

It's your choice, and your family's safety at stake. You are on your own with this one bud.

The Durango can pull it...not a problem. The real question is can the Durango stop the boat and trailer and if a evasive maneuver is needed...can the Durango control the load?
