You could have the big block and still have the same comfort/style. Big blocks work less to do the same amount of work as the small block. My 496 would cruise at way less RPM than my 5.7 does, and it was as easy on gass (if not a little better) than my 5.7, assuming I kept my hand off the throttle :)

If torque, smooth cruising and fuel efficiency is what you seek, you could always drop in a diesel ...

Craig,

Absolutely! And you wouldn't get an argument from me, except for the price increase is very substantial (laughably so) but the Diesels do tend to just break in around the 1000 hour mark... :)

It appears that the Volvo D3-190 would not only accomplish your needs/wants well, but give you twice as much room to work in the bilge.

I'm guessing that the DP-SM outdrive would not bolt up (or hold up). So, I imagine that the price of the engine AND an outdrive would be a bit pricey to convert.

Just for giggles ... I'm going to call and get a quote to convert my 248. I'll let you know ...

Talked to a guy in the Houston area (recommended by my local dealer here in Dallas) that specializes in gas to diesel conversions for boats. He stated that more and more folks are doing this. In fact, he has 3 D3-190's in stock.

The good news is that the DP-SM outdrive bolts up to the D3-190. So, a new outdrive is not necessary. Engine cost is (16.5k) and some other parts to convert (instruments, additional fuel filter) puts the grand total around 18k.

Sounds like a lot. However, the guy stated (and I don't know how much truth there is to this statement), that the D3-190 only weighs 500lbs, will top out at 6 knots faster than the 5.0 and uses 1/3 the amount of fuel.

Interesting stuff.

Craig,

Yep that figure sounds about right, twice the price of a gas package. The fuel economy could easily be in the 9/10 MPG range rather than 2.5/3 with the gas setup. Tons more room in the bilge, no more explosion hazard and probably could then squeek a diesel genset in as well.

Diesels have always been popular across the pond, not here, and it's a shame...

We bought a very well maintained 2005 248 for 31500 a couple of months ago in SW Florida. I think we did a great deal and it felt good as the former owner wasn't upside down on it either. If you are not in a hurry, take your time to look around, there are a lot of deals out there. The 248 is a great boat!!!

I'm not upside down on my 248 but I'll be danged if I'd let mine go for what I owe on it :)

31K for an 05 is a great deal, what kind of shape is the canvas and gelcoat in? Was it kept in salty water?

You are right, the 248 is an amazing boat, tons of room in a somewhat manageable size. There are others in
this segment that don't have near the room of the 248.

I think she was/is in great shape. The canvas and gel are like new. She has a couple of scratches on the side of the swim platform - nothing major, but just enough so that I wasn't too nervous taking her outwhen I just got her, fearing to scratch an impeccable boat ;-)

She is playing in salt water (Florida) but always was dry stored and washed off. The engine always got flushed with Salt Away. Now she is lift kept.

Ric,

That's true.. I wanted to redo the deck on my house with that stuff, but I don't have 50K to spend on a deck! :)
