Just changed my impeller yesterday and found it to be in great condition. I have never done it in the 4 years I have owned the boat which now has approx. 245 hours. In all the paperwork I got with the boat from the original owner, I can not find any indication that he ever had it done (?).

I believe it. I went to change it on my 225 last year, and it looked new. I've still got it in the box in my garage, and the new boat just had it changed two weeks ago....

Hey Guinnydog (and everyone else)...

I bought a 99 with only 70 hours on it - the engine looked pristine (along with everything else)...

When I did the test drive it seemed to run a bit hot.

When I got it home I removed the water pump cover assembly and the impeller was TOAST.

I suppose the previous owner might have run her dry?

Regardless, I had to dig around in the t-stat housing to find the impeller parts and put everything back together.

She runs fine now (knock on wood) but man - I'd hate to think how much damage I could have done if I hadn't been on these forums and researched impellers. I agree with those that have this on their annual or every other year list of things to do...

I think it's a personal pref thing. I'll be changing mine every spring. Cheap peace of mind and insurance. This is our second season with this boat and I changed it out in the Spring for 2 reasons. 1. so if I have a problem on the water, I know what to do and 2. for the peace of mind thing. I posted pictures and comments while I was learning a while back on a thread that aguyindallas started. I'll see if I can dig them up incase anyone with a Volvo is interested.

My boat was only two years old when the impeller when out last week. I had to replace it the day before a week long trip to LOTO :x . Paul, it was a PITA. First, remove the engine.... then remove the impeller on the bottom of the engine..... Then call EVERY PLACE in KC until you can find a replacement!

OK, venting complete.... I just got back from the LOTO, and had a good time. Boat did well over many many miles of WOT operation. We went everywhere between the 47 and the 81 mm! Lots of time tickling 50 mph... not too bad for the 5 blade prop.

This is what I did....
To replace the impeller I went in from the front. I have two removable panels. One in front, the other on the stbd side of the engine. I removed both for access (it doesn't look like you have that prob). Next, remove the belt paying carefull attention to routing. Remove the large hose between the engine mounted H2O pump and the T-stat. Remove the pulley above the raw water pump. This give you access to un-bolt the fuel filter. Diusconnect the fuel hose closest to the front of the engine, the vent hose, and the wire harness also on top of the fuel filter (far left hand bottom of your pic). Un-bolt the filter (two on one side, one in back), remove the mounting bracket from the engine.

This gives you good access for the impeller and hoses. At this point mark and remove the two hoses in back of the impeller, and remove, pulling it forward. The rest will be specific to your make/model.

To install, reverse above. I hope that helps!
