Ok, my obsession toward everything being clean has damaged my antenna whip. The whip was turning sorta grey-ish and it was driving me nuts. I lowered the antenna to horizontal and proceeded to clean it with some clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. That sucker is pure white now, unfortunately, I stripped off all the varnish in the process... what a dumbass I am.

The antenna whip looks brand new, but if you grab it, you get a nice collection of near-microscopic fiberglass splinters in your hand. It is a real pleasure.

Has anyone ever re-varnished their antenna whips? I was thinking of spray painting it with some varnish or something but figured I would post here to see if anyone else has ever refinished an antenna whip and what they used. I would just replace it but I am not sure I like the looks of trying to rerun that cable back into the helm. Do these whips just unscrew and if so, does the wire stay there. In other words could I just unscrew the whip and screw another one on, or is the wire permanently connected/soldered?

Thanks in advance, and feel free to bust my chops for this one.

Jay

They do unscrew but the cable runs to the VHF. Sounds like it's time to buy a nice black digital brand antenna ;)
