898 and 228 engine are not enough to go on....
Boat type and model don't make any difference.

Are you removing a V-8 and replacing it with a V-8 ?

Regards,

Rick

I had a 228 (305 chevy 4 barrel ) for about 20 years, and replaced it with a 350 aftermarket, so am not totally sure about the differences with an 898 -- However -- if you have a Mercrusier aftermarket manual like Clymer it may shed some extra details.

Having said that -- I think the 898 is a 2 barrel GM 305 chevy block

If you stay within a compatable year, so far as same type of rear main seal on both V8's-- you should be able to use an 228 engine. --- With the 228 four barrel carb you should also make more horsepower.

I have no idea about all the little details like manifolds and risers and such -- but the basic engine mounts, and drive coupler should be compatable between the 898 and the 228

You may also need to look at the stern drive input shaft -- splines /number /and size and such -- you should be able to unbolt the coupler from the flywheel of the 898 and bolt it onto the 229 flywheel (dirve plate) though --- again -- a manual like Clymers might help -

You can also see some exploded parts drawing for both these engines on the Doug Russell site (sp) and perhaps do some comparions yourself there.

If you happen to have an MR (MR1) drive it was on my old 228 and therefore will fit from your 898 if you have that.

Good Luck

Clymers is usually pretty good for starting your wood stove......

I seem to remember issues like the type of crankshaft and and rear main seal type compatibility and flywheel and then the flywheel housing (or bell-housing) . (That's been hashed over many times over on iBoats and SEVERAL people have done that swap)

Manifolds, starter, alt mounting brackets will etc... fit both blocks.

The coupler and yoke should not be an issue.

I can't help at all, but as a matter of interest, what are 228 and 898 engines? ( on first reading this, I thought they might have been the rare BMW marine engines !)

The 898 and 228 are Mercruiser V8 engines used in the late 70's and early 80's.
they are both Chevy V8 (305 cu in) blocks and one came with a 4 barrel and one with a 3 barrel.

It is just what Mercruiser called them back then.

I generally agree that Clymers and Seloc are not of much use. But they are readily available and better than nothing.

Yep, in 85/86 GM switched from a 2 piece rear main seal to a 1 piece unit on the small block V8's. Block casting at the rear was slightly different to accomodate this new seal arrangement, the crank was also different (although an adapter kit is available), as was the oil pan and flywheel as well. Bellhousing should be the same - maybe just the coupler will be an issue, really depends on the style. All other stuff is the same and interchangeable.
