At idle, not in gear, my DP-S makes a very quick knocking sound. Knock-knock-knock. It doesn't change if you raise or lower the outdrive at all. I just changed the fluid with fresh VP stuff. Any ideas?

Gear or shift cable adjustment needed?

Hearing the knocking sounds toward the transom indicates a possible issue with coupler, flywheel, gimbal bearing, outdrive, U-Joints, etc. Hard to tell without hearing it. You should have the drive pulled and inspected throughly to make sure it is actually the drive, and not something in the engine itself.

The noise is barely noticable in the engine room, and a lot easier to hear if you bend down and listen where the swim platform meets the hull. I didn't notice it when I ran it on the hose a few days earlier. I'll do that again in a few days and see what I can gather, then get the drive pulled.

Yeah, sounds more like a gimbal bearing. Might just need grease, or it might be shot because no one ever has greased it.

Good point Mike. From what I have heard, the "grandpa" that owned this boat, did little or no maintenance on the boat, he just used it until something broke, or until he passed away. The marina also did not sound like they were very customer oriented. It's a shame, as this is not an old boat, but already has peoblems that I have yet to encounter on a much older 268, that has been maintained properly. No boat is perfect, but little PM can go along way in keeping a boat in good shape.

I think thats the one thing I haven't done to it yet Mike, is grease it. I'll give it a few pumps of grease, that should do the trick. My wife and younger brother couldn't even notice it yesterday until I showed them where to listen.

This boat has been maintained since new. It hasn't been touched since he passed away, but they did store the engine/gen properly.

I'd grease it up and just use the boat for a while.

When a boat has been sitting... you're greasing and changing the fluids -- give things a chance to get back into the 'groove'.

I don't think what you are hearing is going to cause catostrophic failure your first time out or two...

Just check linkage adjustments, grease it up, change the fluids - and see if it goes away.

You'll probably want to pull the drive for a full service and drive alignment at the end of the season anyways.

Thats all it took with the engine Cougar. Just changed the oil/filter/fuel filter, and she's like new :). I changed the drive oil, but I'll grease the gimbal and pull the drive before we head out this weekend also.

Time man, it takes time! I still have a few sections of water line tape to replace, and two small sections I need to touch up on the blue gel coat, but here are some pics. The first few are from delivery day, and the last was taken after I dropped my younger brother off at the ramp last night.

As to the drive noise, I spoke with my new dealer, Melvin Village Marina, (Thanks BHurley!), and it doesn't sound severe. Sounds like a loose exhaust flapper, but he just told me to grease it and pull it and see what I find....

Exhaust flapper is what I was going to say was a distinct possibility. When mine went on my '96 200H I could have sworn it was a bearing since it was a very loud knocking as it got worse. I would have never figured.

You are exactly correct Graham. No exhaust flappers after 1999.
That is why I did not mention it.
See attaached Service Bulletin.
