great day folks,
my 98 278 vista has me a little concerned, my boat starts great seems to run well, only issue is on start up I get some smoke till it is warmed up, port side engine comes up to temp, sits around 150, starboard I beleive my sensor is off as it shows 100-120 degrees, so 2 questions, 1 is it possible that the sensor is telling the engine it is cold and loading up with fuel, seeing the cold status, other possibility is it a valve guide/seal dried out issue, once warm it stops?
boat is new to me this year, but it sat on a lot last year and don't think it seen a lot of lake time

engines are 4.3 gi(fuel injected) and seem to run quite well,
any thoughts nd or theories would be great.

Is it black or blue smoke?

Black is usually due to excessive fuel / not enough air

Blue is usually due to oil.

What do the plugs look like?

The ECM does take the temperature of the coolant into consideration when it calculates how much fuel to inject. Can you swap the temperature sensors over from one engine to the other to se if one really is running a lot cooler ( thermostat stuck open perhaps ?). Or maybe borrow a IR non contact thermometer?

Is only the starboard engine smoking ..... and is the smoke black/brown?

If so:

If the one engine is only showing 100-120 degrees, or so, then it may have a thermostat stuck open. The sensors for the gauges and the engine management system are different sensors, so swapping the sensors does not work in this case. Therefore, if the gauge is showing 100-120 then that engine is cold and it may still be in the richer warm-up mode.

If the temperature gauge sensors on the two engines are swapped over, why wouldn't it show if one engine was truly running at a lower temperature?

thanks guys, I have an IR temp gun, supposed to be heading upp lake tommorrow eve, so i will grab a temp to see where really at, I swapped both thermos out figuring that may be the problem and I did not know the boat history, will see where that takes me, is it correct that the gauge temp is pulled from the sensor on the starboard side of the thermo housing? and is it correct that the system uses another for the management system, if so, where is the second sensor?(pics would be great\\
