I own a 2002 four winns horizon 200 with the 5.0 volvo NOT fuel injected. every time I exceed 3000 rpms my alarm beginns to kind of chatter is the best way to describe it. Then if I dont slow down it eventually goes to full strong alarm. To stop the sensor I have to slow down stop turn off the engine and wait the after a few minutes I can start and go on as along as I dont crank up again. I aslo noticed that if I am not really pushing fast speed but just begin to hear that alarm sound like its going to come on I lower the trim and it goes away almost like pushing more water through makes go away. The problem is I dont know what to replace, the pump the thermostat, the sensors. Has anyone else had this problem?

Therms range is from 120 to 220 its right in the middle and goes up just above that average mark right in the middle when the alarm begins to sound

Replacing the impeller would be the place I would start. Take it apart and look at it. Fairly easy job and should be done ever other year at the least, IMO.

Looks good too. I read on Iboat message board one guy has the same problem. His is fuel injected though. so the computer on his takes over and throws him into idle for a few minutes.

My buddies Yamaha 200 outboard sounds the alarm at about that point when his oil level is low.

Here is what I decided to do about it after talking to a dealer who said 90% of the time start with the impeller and thermostat. The impeller looks good but the dealer said that even if it looks good that at a high RPM it might begin to flex more and there for not pump as much water as needed. I contacted the previous owner and he said that it was replaced in Aug of 07. So that maybe the problem. Also I ordered a thermostat kit. The total for both parts was $88 buck shipping and all. Also I will backflush all the lines into from the pump and risers. This will require some 3/4 inch hose clamps from lowes prob about .50 a piece. Ill bet that fixes it. Will keep all posted. There is a posting that I read tittled overheating under Engine and drive I think. This plus the info from the dealer prompted the decision.

I agree it's probably that....but what else can cause the alarm???

Mine also has the low drive level alarm. It was a little low this weekend, and would go off if I was sitting in the water bow-low. It's also the only alarm I know will go off even with the engine off, but not change the engine operation.

I remember a fairly recent post, maybe not on this forum, where there was an overheating problem at higher rpm and it turned out to be the impellor. Not the vanes, but the rubber part was not properly bonded to the metal splined insert that fits onto to the drive shaft; so it was slipping at high rpm.

Graham,
I saw that one too. It was one that made me think that the impeller is the prob plus it hasnt been changed since 07, I think it is prob having the same problem, I just ordered the thermostst kit to have and play it safe so that if I replace both maybe we can have a nice weekend with no problems.
Thanks everyone for reading I will post again after the weekend of the 15th and let everyone know it all went.

If the impeller is about a year old -- replace it anyway -- just looking at it won't really show any deformed blades without pulling it out - and if you pull it out you might as well replace it
