If you are interested, you can get a keyless FOB to run the trim/tilt. I ran one using a cheap car alarm system. No drilling required, but took some good electrical drawings as well as a dose of self-confidence. Check under "Walt's Mod's"... I think I put all that in there.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the mounting info. Sounds like a fairly small hole. I was thinking there was a bigger one. That round connector just looked odd compared to the picture someone posted of the wiring in the engine compartment.

Took some pictures yesterday (damn humidity fogged the first picture) in the area where someone else posted showing the wiring for the trim.

The first picture has two unconnected wires. Would this be for the remote transom wiring? Second picture is the other end of the wiring that has a connector.

Just looks different from the transom switch parts wiring.

Can anyone let me know if those are the trim control wires? Thanks

Yes, that round connector in the second picture. Unplug that, and plug in both ends of the wiring that comes with the switch.

It's that easy!

Just received the switch. Besides having very short wires, I am not positive on all the connections. Here is a picture of the switch and wires:

Image

Looking up you will see my round connector that firecadet said I am to unplug and plug into the remote transom tilt switch round connector. Where do the other two wires go?

If I unplug, and plug this in, where does the "old (ie unplugged part)" connect? Unplugging would disconnect the trim control from the throttle right?

One is on a black wire with a female connector Image and the other is blue and brown with a smaller female connector.

Thanks for any help.

Is the switch the same one I posted? My gut tells me you got the other one...

This is what the one I used looks like...

I bought the Volvo Penta one thinking it would be plug and play and be OEM. I have a feeling that is why 230 Mike's dealer had to splice it as he has the Volvo switch that looks like mine.

Firecadet-yours has much longer wires too! I hate doing returns!

I added the merc switch to my 98 240 Horizon 5.7L Volvo. The connector was located on top the engine, near the rear, wired tied to some wires laying on top of the intake manifold. I disconnected and plugged in the switch and tested operation before I ever cut in the switch. A hole saw goes right thru the hull. It's mounted on the left side above the swim platform. Truly plug and play. Wnenn

I think the problem with the VP switch is that it as not designed originally for use as a secondary trim switch on the transom. It is used as the primary trim switch on boats that do not have the trim switch on the throttle lever. Hence only one connector. It is probably also used on Flybridge boats with an additional wiring loom with one connector at the flybridge end, with the 2 connectors required at the transom at the opposite end of the additional wiring loom.

Graham I agree with you.

Wnenn-The merc switch is plug and play as it has 2 round connectors. Unplug the one on the boat and plug one connector on the one of the new switch and the other round connector to the one other side on the boat.

The Volvo switch only has 1 round connector. No way to make the complete connection. I tried to stay with the Volvo "matching" part, but cannot. Volvo part is going back and mercbon the way.

Returned the Volvo switch and bought the Merc.

Here is the result (look to the left of the handle above the ladder):

I've got to ask something.... Does the switch work if the battery switch is off? I would want one of these for up and down once I am on the ground so I wouldn't have to climb back in! having to climb back in to turn on the battery switch would kind of defeat the purpose.

I believe it does (have to verify). I was doing the same thing. Jumping in the boat to raise or lower (or climb on the trailer and reach over).

The easiest mod. Plug and play. 3/4 hole with two pilot holes for the screws. Since its on the curve there was a little gap in some areas, so I put the 5200 on the edge. Need to clean it some in the picture i see, but didnt want water getting in.

As standard, trim wouldn't work if the battery switch was off ( a pain !). One option would be to rewire it so it ran off the bilge pump circuitry, which is independent of the battery switch ( with a diode pack if you have 2 batteries, to prevent one discharging the other). However, you'd have to check the current handling capability of the diodes/ wiring.
