I have a 2003 Vista 378. It has 8.1 Liter Volvo engines with ZF Marine Hurth v-drive transmissions. When I am idling, I get a pretty loud rattling noise out of the transmissions (not always). They go in and out of gear just fine, and I do not hear the noise when I accelerate. I have been told this is not unusual, but it does make me a little uncomfortable. Is there any need to worry?

Any advise appreciated, I am new to v-drives.

I had V-Drives in my 2000 Carver 406 MY and they sounded like they had rocks in them when at idle. When I sold it, the surveyor didn't say anything about them other than "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I too never had any problems with shifting and they ran great and quiet when under way. The guy who bought my boat a year and a half ago, is a member of the same yacht club as me and the transmissions are still running just fine.
