I have 1998 FW258 with a 7.4 L Volvo duoprop O/D. When traveling slowly and I turn sharply left or right there is a 'ticking' sound from the outdrive. Is this normal? Could it be as simple as greasing a lube point?

Thanks for your help.

You could try greasing the gimbal bearing, but it's almost certainly the U-joints in the drive. If it's those, you'll have to pull the drive to get to them (they're easy to get to once the drive is off). They should be lubed every 1-2 years depending on usage. They might just need lubed, or they might be wearing out.

As Mike wrote, it sounds like the U/Js, on a 1998 drive the U/Js are greasable, they need doing every 12 months.

If they are worn, then replacement joints are no longer available from Volvo Penta; they will just try to sell you a complete new input shaft!

If you can get aftermarket ones, they are very easy to change; if you do change them, make sure the zerks are pointing in the right orientation; to prevent them fouling on the yokes .

Howdy,

It might be your U-joints. It's quite likely the gimbal bearing too.....If the U-joints are rusty, then you probably have a bellows leak.

If you're removing the drive to inspect yearly or every other year you would catch this before it gets too far......If you have never removed the drive and inspected the U-joints, you are running on borrowed time and when a U-joint breaks, it causes a LOT of damage ($$$)

Regards,

Rick

Gentlemen:

Thanks for the advise - I will take care of checking and lubing the U/J and gimbal joints before I put it back in the water.

Merry Christmas
