Sometimes (and especially after fueling) blowers are not enough to evacuate fumes. It is always best to open the hatch and sniff before starting engines. In Roche Harbor, WA last year (I think) someone had just refueled and run their blower for five plus minutes and yet the same thing happened to him. It blew the hatch off his engine room into the air.

that was a pretty big boom here in town. Some of my friends saw it blow, it was a pretty bad deal.

Scary stuff. Good thing for the guys fishing close by to help them out though.

I usually gas up on the water at a local gas dock (Northport Long Island) and I am always suprised at how infrequent it is that someone will actually open up the engine hatch and sniff....I see this on all kinds of boats...bowriders...bigger cruisers...etc....I bet many people don't even know that you are supposed to turn OFF the blower and SHUT all the hatches when fueling and then OPEN the engine hatch...SNIFF and then put on the blower...

I've said this before on other threads but this is just one more reason that my next boat will be an outboard.....

I don't get it....just what advantages of modern outboards do you not understand...does not take up room in the rear of the cockpit......same HP with 400 lbs less weight on the stern....no bellows to leak water in the blige and ruin your gimble bearing and ujoints...no issue with engine misalignment and coupler problems...corrosion resistant construction designed for salt water use...and no fume in the blige worry....now that you have to have CAT coverters on sterndrives...I can't see why someone wouldn't want an OB on a small boat...today's OBs are not the smokey rough running 2 stokes of years gone by and FW is losing market share by NOT selling boats with them....

I agree with you about outboards vs inboards, FW should offer both in their horizon and smaller boat
lineup. Outboards also allow you to go in shallower water. My horizon has an old Johnson that still runs
great 13 years later. I wish FW offered outboards on their newer boats, more pluses than minuses IMO.
