I would be careful when trying to use the Prop Calculators. There are assumptions in there that are not clearly identified.
The calculator could be useful for comparing the SAME prop at different pitches. However when you start talking about three or four or five blades you cannot do that on the calculator. Likewise the diameter is not even mentioned. A lot of the props involve not only a pitch change, and a number of blades change, but a change in the overall diameter. these and other factors like Rake, cup, and more mean you cannot compare different props on the calculators.

My advice is often the direction that this seems to be going --
First - talk to others with a similar boat and engine.
Second -- Find a place where you can purchase a prop, or pay for a loaner to test. This may not be the bargain buy, but it should be the overall best buy to develop a relationship with someone where you can try a couple of props.

Unfortunately props still involve a lot of trial and error ----

Appreciate the comments. I made an error in that I was running with a 19 pitch prop- not a 21 pitch. With that being said, I spoke with Bob at MidWest Prop and ordered the 4 blade 20 pitch stainless steel. This is what he recommended so I am looking forward to seeing the difference.

Bob's never steared me wrong! He was a little curious when I showed up to order the hi-five. You won't be disappointed.

Make sure you post your results from both props!

FYI, you are starting from the same pitch I was. We have the same HP, and basically same hull. As I recall, I had 48 mph hitting the rev limiter with the 20" Apollo 4 blade SS (low end of the 4 blade spectrum); while my 19P 3 blade SS was getting me 52-54 mph at 5200 rpm. The 21p hi-five results in 51-53 mph at 5200 rpm. Basically, not much loss in top end, or RPM.... but monsterous difference in low and mid-range acceleration and handling.

It is killing me to hear about your performance gains when running the high five. I asked him a couple of times if he was sure the 4 blade was the best application for what I was looking for. As you pointed out, I will try the 4 blade out this year and then go with the high five next year. I will post the results as it should be here by Saturday. My boat is heading up to the marina for the yearly service on Saturday so I'll get them to put it on.

Well it arrived today and I put it on before taking it to the marina for service. Two words- simply amazing. Hit 50 mph at 4800 rpm and effortless planing. I barely lost any top end and the performance is great. Thanks for all the direction to everyone that chimed in.

What is your WOT rpm range? Looks to me that your are running a little shy of where the RPM range should be (~5200 RPM @WOT?). I think you have the right prop regardless. Perhaps just need to get the old gas burned out and fresh run through. Let it run for the season, and see what happens!

Walt- I didn't give it much time to get "up there". Since it had not been run since last Summer, I didn't want to push it too hard until the drive has been pulled, inspected and realigned along with all the fluids and filters changed. Looking forward to seeing what it'll do here shortly, though.

My 2005 H200 (5.0) was rated at a 21 pitch, 14.25 (3-blade) prop from the factory (if I remember correctly). I just ordered a Solas Amita 19 pitch, 14.25 prop from Iboats for $98.99. I know it's only aluminum, but I noticed a drop of about 3mph top end, but the time to plane and lower speed handling was an amazing difference. Considering I dropped 2 pitch sizes I never hit the rev limiter and was maxed out at my 5000rpm limit. I'm very happy with this inexpensive upgrade over my 3-blade.

Hit closer to the 5000 rpm bringing her back home today. Speedometer may have been off, but I hit 54 and it may have kept climbing a little if I had carried on. I just had my first full service done so that may have played into the extra performance. Either way, I am stoked with the 4 blade.

Good to see. Both of you, please post your before/after results and GPS speeds.

E- I was out last weekend with two friends. I have the new PP, which includes a GPS speedo, and actual digital tach. For me it was tough keeping it from going too high in the RPM range, but at 5200 RPM digital I was holding 50 MPH by GPS. I think I could prop-up in the future, but love the low range "giddy-up". Afterall, how often to I run at 50 mph anyway?

There are only 2 reasons that I ever want to go fast

1) Bad weather is quickly approaching and the wife gives me that look- you know the one....
2) Dinner at one of the local restaurants is going a little too good and you don't realize that the sun is about to set. I live up the river that feeds into Lake Lanier and there are some hazards at one point and I like to have a little daylight to see. I have been known to drop the hammer to get past this point if the sun is going down on me. I grounded my sundancer a few years back in this area.

Other than that, I don't enjoy operating my boat in the most inefficient range which of couse is WOT.

I will have to get a gps to check the speed out accurately. Can't thank you enough for all the advice and direction.

For me, the best burgers around are on the water. As far as the weather, that low-profile windshield I have is worthless in deflecting rain.... at 50 mph!
