I feel dumb for asking, but I have a couple of questions myself. I purchased a 2007 H200 (5.0l merc) last fall. I never paid attention to the odd shaped "thing" on the key ring. I actually thought it was part of the key ring or just so excited to finally own a boat I didn't pay attention. Anyway, it says Perko. I'm just have no idea what it goes to??

I have also located three wires laying across the top of the engine between the carb and distributor, 2 black and one orange, with a terminal ring attached to the end of each. They are coming out of a conduit. I have not tried to trace them yet. They are just laying across the top of the manifold. I had the boat a couple of times in the fall before winterizing and she ran great. Last weekend I pulled her out of the garage, hooked up the muffs and she started right up. I was just getting ready to do spring cleaning and found these. I appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Thank you Brent, That makes sense considering it is attached to the key. I would have never figured that out.

On my boat, that would be for the water fill cap - the fuel cap is a twist-off.

Other boats may be different, though.

I had one of those in the bag of things that came with my 1999 boat; I tried to use it once on the fuel filler cap, it worked great but I dropped it in the water and never saw it again because they sink!

Black is usually ground ( 0 V). Orange is usually +12V; I can't imagine they'd leave a live wire exposed and loose. maybe it's for an hour meter ? ( with the fuse removed as it's not connected). But there again, an hour meter should be connected to the ignition switch/engine ignition circuit, rather than permanett +12V

I carry mine on a SEPERATE floaty (in the glove box) plus I keep a spare in my tool kit (just in case the floaty doesn't float it...I actually haven't tested to see it it has enough buoyancy to float it -- those keys are heavy)

The proper name for the thing on the key ring is a deck key. It may fit more than one thing, fuel caps, water caps, etc. BTW, it's not a bad idea to have a spare.

On the loose wires, I'm with Graham, I can't believe they were left like that. I'd call the folks that winterized your boat to find out what's up with that. I'd also suggest individually taping them up with some electrical tape if you must run the engine again before getting those wires squared away.

Just checked my 2007 owners manual - if that wire is orange with yellow stripe, I'd bet your blower isn't working. Not good!

The three wires shown in the photos on a Merc are "extra" if the engine is carburated. Depending on the model year, a 50amp fuse was added for fuel injected motors. As the motors are produced they are "pre-wired" for both applications. Simply tape them off separately and you will be fine.

Check your under your fuel fill cap. I have a similar set up for the fuel fill lock I purchased from Perko that fits inside of the fuel fill.

Those three wires are going to be for the Mercathode system, Those wires are NOT live unless you hook them up to a little blue box called the Mercathode, And to make the Mercathode system work you would also need to run a red 12 volt power wire from a battery over to the little blue box that would mount to the engine.

The Mercathode system is to help fight off corrosion on the sterndrive, The only time you would need the Mercathode hooked up is if you left the boat in the water for a long time at a dock that has electrolysis in the area.

Because your boat has an alpha sterndrive, Your engine package does not come stock with the complete Mercathode system.

You could tape up the three wires if you would like to, But it is not necessary to do so.

Here is a really good read about the Mercathode system if your interested.
