I've booked myself and the missus on our Boat Licence Course, it's one evening at the Four Winns boat dealers as it happens, on 31st May. I'm not sure what courses if any have to be done in other parts of the world, here in Victoria, Australia it's a read of a 90-page booklet, about 4 hours of classroom instruction (optional) and then a mutiple-guess test. I've elected to go the classroom, although I have owned 3 boats before, they were of a very different type and in a different country and I need to brush up!!!

Once we have sat the course we can go and collect our licences, then we can do sea trials of boats and get to drive them ourselves rather than just riding along while the dealer drives.

now.... Starboard, is that the front or the back of the boat....? :D

Here in the U.S. it varies by state if you need a license or not. Here in Michigan, any idot er, I mean, anyone can buy a boat and go put themselves, their families and others in potential peril.

I'm sure someone with better info will come along with a link or list of what the different states do or don't require.
