I wonder what makes stupid people buy boats this is what I saw this wekend and it pissed me off.

1. Family pulling a tube with kids on it...no life jackets
2. We were anchored in a large cove and people coming in to anchor came in way to fast and waked everyone not a big deal if your not tied up to another boat.
3. Rudeness at the ramp, some people just dont get it, jumping the line, working (mechnical) on their boats or PWC on the ramp.
4. Cluelessness about proper procedure on passing and holding a line on the water.

All in all I still had fun however I wish stupidity was painful.

Mike

I couldn't believe the amount of people out on the water where I boat, I was amazed. Store owners were saying they had record sales on Saturday. Perhaps improved consumer confidence?, maybe the economy is turning around after all.

My emotions are going back and forth tonight. I was stoked when my daughter rode the tube for the first time by herself on Saturday.

Then I get online tonight checking the local news and see this:

http://www.kcci.com/news/23746995/detail.html

Just can't understand why any boat would be that close for it to be a risk.

This same thing happened to a friend of mine a few years back, this enrages me. You can do everything right, then someone else is stupid and ruins many lives. Theres hardly even anything to say.

I was in DM with a few Navy buds this weekend. We were on Big Creek (no wake lake), and even that was crowded. Crossing "Mile-Long Bridge" over Saylorville Lake We saw a Baja with about 8 peeps in it just threading through traffic cutting way too close to others and going way too fast. The holidays just bring out the worst in all of us!

going out to our regular hangout on Sunday, I have this smallish bowrider, 17/18' converging on my line of travel, slighly behind me and to my port. He wanted to cross over my line from the left and kept looking at me like i should slow down and let him cross. He finally pulled back and crossed behind me....

To quote Ron White, "you cant fix stupid!!"

fell off a tube being towed by a boat and was struck by another oncoming boat at about 7 p.m.

Tubing this late in the day??? This is a very busy time on the water with a lot of tired boaters (and drunk). I don't even like to drive my boat after 3:00 p.m. let alone go tubing. However, prior to my having a family, I used to boat late into the day and one time going back to the slip I had to pass through a winding channel (following a bunch of other boats and going cruising speed) and sure enough, there was some dumbass towing their kid at a snails pace and we had no choice but to pass close by at a fast pace. Had that kid fallen off, I am sure one of the many boats going through the channel would have hit him.

Guess I was lucky this weekend...hit the lake Memorial Day and boat traffic was surprisingly light until late afternoon. We had on avg 4 to 5 boats in the favorite cove....those wanting to anchor hit the far end and everyone stayed clear of that area so they could swim and not get rocked too much. The rest of us all seemed to work together very well and never had any issues - inside and outside lanes were all well maintained.

We did have two different boaters come thru and disrupt things for a little while....one was tubing and other just cruising right across not paying any attention to anyone.....he wasn't at the helm, putting across the cove (guess getting a candy bar or something - he apparently is adapt at keeping his calorie intake up).....i saw him coming so had already come to a stop since he was clueless...just waited for him to get close (i had already manuevered out of his line and ready to react moreso if needed)...he never knew i was there so then i blasted the horn and holllered OMG Watch Out....he nearly fell racing for the helm - as i putted off (laughing) his wife i assume was all over him and apologizing for his ignorance. Oh the stress of it all:)

This past Saturday we were going through the narrows on our lake, we were to the
far right going slowly, other boat traffic was on the other side and a ski boat full of teens snaked
their way through the middle at warp speed.

The thing about it is that if they were to slam into me I would be involved in an accident,
lets just say that if I had had anything to drink it would be my fault. Unbelievable!!

I missed Memorial Day Weekend at the lake for the first time in several years due to a death in my wife's family. Not having to deal with the above-referenced idiots was about the only consolation for it.

Yesterday was too windy so we just had a bbq on the beach. I watched a 40 something foot Carver try to set his anchor for an hour and a half!! He was dragging for well over 1/4 mile. He tried 5 times and then gave up and left the area. It was highly entertaining though!

Bad weekend for boaters here in Iowa. http://www.thehawkeye.com/story/accident-brief-060110

No major issues where I'm at locally that I heard of. We had a nice day Sunday. Got checked over by the DNR. Passed with flying colors.

Regarding the kid being hit by another boat, we have a section of the river where that is all too possible. It's a popular chute off the main channel that most people cut through, or hang out in. It used to be great because it is narrow and almost always smooth. Great for water sports of all kinds. Now it's just too crowded. I don't like having anybody in the water in that chute unless it has cleared out. Most boaters appear to believe it is their right to go as fast as they want despite what's going on around them. Just plain stupidity. The good news is the Mississippi is a big place to boat. We can generally avoid the idiots when necessary.
