Well I put a new prop on the boat this weekend and wow. But it seems now when i put it in drive or reverse is engages hard and loud. May have done before but not sure. Idle is a little high right now, could that be it.? Seems to be at 1200 rpms.

With a 1200 RPM idle, the shifts would be rather "rude". You need to get that idle down.

Something closer to 850 rpm. Mine were at 1000+ and used to clunk in gear. Much improved now lowered to 850ish. In gear it now shows on gauge around 650 which is generally the listed spec for a 4.3. I would imagine most engine sizes to be similar.

I agree with stimpy the idle seems way to high, that would for sure make it clunk into gear,
