Had something odd happen to me on my way back from my Trip to Haverstraw this weekend. Left the slip and got going out on the Hudson and the RPM's were reading ~4000 and I was only going around 10mph.. normally if I'm hitting 4000rpm I'm going roughly 25mph. Odd thing was that the engine did not seem to be working that hard to be at 4000rpm. So I turned the boat off out in the river and noticed that my RPM gauge after shutting down was still showing 2000RPM. I tapped on the gauge till it went down to zero, then started her up again. Didn't have any issues for the rest of the day. Anyone else have this happen? Is it something to worry about?

I had it happen in my previous Sea Ray.... tapping on it, like you did, seemed to be the resolution. Never got around to really "fixing" it per se :)

Four Winns it hasn't happened on yet...

It happens all the time to my port tach and never to the starboard. My old Searay was the opposite. Tapping usually works, once in awhile a restart is needed. I changed the tach on the Searay and it helped for a while but then came back, never bothered on the Four Winns.

I suspect either the 4-6-8 cylinder switch on the back of the tach or loose wiring.

My guess is also the switch on thr back or wiring.

If it was turning 4000rpm's you'd hear it.

Yeah I know, this is why I was weirded out. I was thinking... I'm not even moving and the RPM is showing 4000.... what's going on...

My tach is all over the place...usually high (I think) It somtimes jumps to 2800 rpm when it's just started and is only idling, then it stays high. Once warm, it seems to settle down.
I hope it's just loose wires.

I've been seeing something similar on my H260. I noticed my tach was floating, so I listened real close and there was definitely no fluctuation in the engine. Every once in awhile since, I'll notice it running higher than what the engine is truly revving. It appears to be random. I've read somewhere (quite possibly here) that the nut on the back can get too loose or tight causing funny stuff to happen. I did replace my guage bulbs with red LEDs, so I could have inadvertantly adjusted something to cause this. I haven't got around to playing with it though. If that doesn't work, then I think I'll try calling Faria. I've had good experience with them in the past, and have seen others on this board testify Faria has stood by their products. I know my boat is technically not under warranty, but I figured a call to them wouldn't hurt.

all of my guages go wonky... spedo doesn't kick in until at least 17mph, tach sometimes fluctuates, fuel guage pops all over the place unless standing still and untill I installed the new alternator my volt meter read 16v consistanty (now it reads 13.5-14)

I talked to a local dealer and he said learn the boat it will tell you more than a guage ever will.... it's a common issue

Haha, so it seems that my problem is a minor one.
