I'm just curious how this works. I haven't taken mine apart, and mine is working fine. I know occasionally you will have to reprime your AC, and I know anytime the AC is on its running. Wouldn't that eventually wear out the impeller?

Thanks. So no worry of it wearing out?

The AC pump is like a bilge pump, the impeller does not touch anything when its spins. This means they don't wear out and they don't burn up if you run them dry. But the down side is that they will not self prime. It must have water in the pump to pump water.

The rubber impeller in a engine seawater cooling pump, compresses against the inside of the pump chamber. These pumps will actual draw a vacuum and suck water into the pump. This of course causes friction and wears out the pump. especially when you run them dry.

I replaced my AC seawater pump a few months ago. A thin sheen on the water when it is running (anytime the compressor runs the pump runs, too) is a precursor to pump failure - in my case, the oil-filled casing corrosion behind the impeller. The impeller and the pump shell itself were fine, so they are in the junk box for the future.
