I HAVE A 1995 VISTA 258 WITH 5.8L OMC, AND COBRA OUTDRIVE. THERE IS A WATER PUMP ON THE MOTOR, THE PREVIOUS OWNER STATED, WHEN ASKED, THAT THERE IS NOT AN IMPELLER IN THE OUTDRIVE, THE MOTOR HAS A WATER PUMP THAT PUMPS IN THE WATER. I CALLED A PARTS DEALER, AND PURCHASED AN IMPELLER. ACCORDING TO A COUPLE OF SITES I DO SEE THAT THE OUTDRIVE HAS AN IMPELLER. IM CONFUSED!!! NEVER OWNED OMC BEFORE AND AM TRYING TO FIGURE THIS STUFF OUT. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS

Voilvo Penta and OMC had a JV in the 1990's. The Cobra drive was developed by that JV; later to become the Volvo Penta SX drive; if your drive is one of them, it has no impeller in the outdrive.

Its easy to figure out just by looking. Im pretty positive on yours that it is on the engine, not sure if its on the front of the crank or a pulled driven pump but its got 2 hoses going to it so you will see it somewhere.

Look at part #62 in this schematic, if yours looks like that then you have the engine mounted impeller.
The confusion comes from the fact that there were 3 basic different OMC Cobras made. One was the original OMC dog clutch design and this had the impeller in the rear end of the upper unit of the outdrive. The other was the limited production King Cobra (cone clutch) made from 90-95 or so and this also had the impeller in the same location. Then there were the joint venture models that were made from 94-98 with Volvo which were the same as a Volvo SX, these did have the impeller on the engine. More importantly those drives are the same as a Volvo of the same year and parts are not a problem..
