Hello, new (first time) owner here. :D

We've rented occassionaly (mostly 19' open bows), and have bought for the first time - a 2000 Four Winns 230 Horizon with a Volvo 7.4 Duoprop and 160 hours. Very clean and well outfitted. We're going to use it primarily on Lake Powell, where we also bought a share in a houseboat (after years of renting). Had a mechanic run a compression check on the engine, and took it out for a test run on a local lake. Broker is detailing the boat and fixing a couple of minor things. Expect to buy a tow vehicle (3/4 ton 4wd crew cab pickup truck) in the next couple of days. We pick the boat up later this week and will head to Lake Powell the last week of August.

Already enjoyed reading on this board. Look forward to doing more. Any suggestions would be welcome.

KJF

Welcome to the board! Rule 1 is, post pics as soon as you can. :) There are several 230 owners of that vintage here. I also know a guy myself who owns one but isn't a member here. Sounds like you've done your homework and made a good buying decision.

Being a Midwest boater but with ties to AZ, I've always wanted to boat at Powell but don't know if I'll ever get the chance... that's a long tow.

As to suggestions - it seems you've gone over the boat with a fine toothed comb - but how about the trailer? They tend to require almost more maintenance than the boat. Brake lines bled, hubs lubed, bearing conditions checked, lights, etc. If the trailer still has the original lights, consider converting to LED's.

On the boat, either know with certainty when the impeller was last changed, or get it done now. Make sure you have the right anodes on the drive (magnesium for fresh water, not zinc or aluminum).

Welcome!

What a great motor for that boat. I run a 7.4 GSI DP on my 260 with great results. Which 7.4 do you have?

Dave
I am betting he only has a 7.4 Gi (same as mine) since the Gsi was not available in 2000. BTW, I found out my boat was the first 2001 260 made in May of 2000

Nice choice and sounds practically new....i second the post about the trailer.....take a look at the inside of the wheels and look for streaks of fluid....either brake fluid or axle oil (they use the oil bath system now not sure about then)....if you see this they need to correct the prob or you will. It's nothing major, but still something.

Welcome to the forum - great choice in the boat you picked out. You don't see many with the 7.4 in them - added bonus. Good friend had a 2000 with the 5.7 volvo w/duo prop that we spent alot of time on & it was a very nice boat all around - can't imagine how much nicer it would be with the 7.4.

Thanks everyone. We have taken the boat and trailer to a local maintenance shop (recommended by several friends). They are going to go through the engine and outdrive. I'm having them replace the impeller and fuel filter. I am also having them go over the trailer, including repacking the bearings.

The engine is the 7.4Gi.

Here is a photo of the boat at the dealer. We hope to have it in the water this coming weekend.

OK, now we believe you. :) You're starting off right, getting those things taken care of. Have them check the anodes too, for condition and for the right material for the water you'll be boating in.

We got back Wednesday evening from a week at Lake Powell (Bullfrog marina). Our new Four Winns is fantastic. We had a marvelous time.

We spent the first few days pulling the kids and their friends on tubes and wakeboards. They left on Sunday evening to get back to college, and my wife and I spent the next few days exploring. Had lots of wind on Sunday (steady at 30 mph, gusting to over 50). The Horizon handled the rough water just fine and, fortunately, the anchors held on the houseboat.

Monday and Tuesday were perfect days -- temperatures in the mid 80s, and no wind at all. Saw lots of shooting stars at night. All in all, a great first time to Lake Powell with the new boat.

A few photos:
