There have been a couple posts indicating that Lake Michigan and Lake Erie were rough on Sunday, well Lake Huron and the Saginaw bay were pretty bad too. We took the boat across on Saturday to Caseville where the annual Cheeseburger Festival is held. The trip out was in 2 foot or less and was a pretty nice run over the 40 + miles. Yesterday when I got up, I noticed the wind howling, so I turned on the radio for the marine forecast; 3-5 was forecasted for the day in the bay and 6-8 out on the lake. Thinking that if they were closer to 3's we should be fine, decided to give it a go with a bunch of other boats making the same trip. My wife wasn't very happy with that choice and after having done it, I wont be doing that again anytime soon. It was a pretty tense 1.5 - 2 hours! I'm pretty sure that were closer to 5-6 footers and one of the kids lost his breakfast.

As Cap'n stated that water like that separates the men from the boys..... I guess Ill hang with the boys on the dock for another day

Unless you have boated on the Great Lakes enough, most people have no idea how rough
they can get. It is often worse than the ocean.

Our neighbor in the marina tried to cross to Milwaukee a week ago Sunday. He made it
out about 40 miles and turned back. He broke both pins on his trim tabs, fridge door fell
off the hinges and bent them, storage shelf uner the V-berth split the wood and he has
a dozen new stress cracks in his gel coat. And a few other things were damaged.
He won't do that again either.

If it was 6' to 8' I would have been on your ass like your wife, but only after I was thru selling Buick's with your son:) I guess I'm a wimp, but i can't handle that kind of water.

Ive talked to several people who said "it wasn't that bad". Huh, they must have took a different route than me I guess. I fella even did it with a tri tune pontoon boat

Have been out in 5-6 footer probably a dozen times...not with current boat though . It takes some getting used to for sure. I would say 10 or 11 of those times was in a following sea...so not bad at all. Taking them head on is another story and we found a closest port to spend the night.

Is this typical for Lake Michigan in late August? I may have to rethink going to Hammond next weekend.

Fairly typical, you have to pick your days this time of year. Also, flys are starting to make their usual
Late August early September appearance. They were nasty this past Monday night when we were out.
Waves said "1 to 2 feet" they were easy 3foot +, but it was still manageable.

That's a cool surface temperature map. Too bad I don't have access to my GPS coordinates handy so I could plot where we typically swim. Most run to the sandbar using their GPS as it's quite a distance off shore. In just looking at the temperature map, it would be close to the one reading of 72.2 degrees.

Good swimming and boat cleaning temperatures for me still, we'll see how long it lasts........
