Can't believe I did it....but I'd have to say boating this long without making a stupid mistake like this is pretty good.

So we go to break a raft up today, my wife handles removing the center line from the boats. I'm more worried about making sure we don't hit...it is very windy out.

I go and push UP on the windlass button as I realize its still tied to the cleat.

One of the three strands snapped. Thankfully I was able to get it past the windlass and all put away just fine.

My question is, I've got 30' of chain and 200' of rode. This occured 35' into the rope section. I'm sure I can just replace the rope, but how do I figure out how to splice it into the chain so it can fit through the windlass? I really don't want to have to buy a whole new chain/rode set again....

If you google a rope to chain splice you can find step by step on how to re splice it yourself....or you can call some local marinas and see if they can do it they usually charge $20 to do it.

On my 268 earlier this year, the rope to chain splice started fraying. it would sometimes bind up in the windlass. I was in the same situation, i didnt want to buy the whole setup, so I used this link.

http://www.johndanicic.com/sailing%20pages/GOB%20articles/JF07_Splicing.pdf

It took me about 4 trys to get it right. Good luck

Thanks Jeff.

I'm hearing that the windlass shouldn't of had enough power to break my rope...so I should replace the entire setup. Yesterday it held myself and a 340DA just fine in some pretty good winds though. Not sure just yet if I will replace the entire rope, or just cut it off where it broke and resplice.

Yeah but did it break it or more like jammed and cut it?

It was cleated off and when I pushed the up button at the helm I realized it was still cleated. Got up there and it had snapped right at the windlass itself...so probably cut now that you mention it.

that's what I'm thinking. Id try to splice it if you can afford to lose the 35 feet of rode.

I had to resplice my anchor rode as well but I took the line completely out of the locker and spliced the less used end to the anchor. Here is the site I used to learn how to splice. You will want to use the Chain Splice but the Eye Splice illustrates it better.

Thanks for the link.

After thinking back how the rope was broken/cut when I first walked up there...it was definatly sliced by the windlass. I'll go ahead and loose the 35 feet or so of rope, and just resplice it.

Between the links I've look at here and YouTube videos...it doesn't look to be that hard.

At least its a cheap fix! 165ft of rope and 30ft of chain is still plenty....

A rope to chain splice is the easiest splice to do. But unfortunately it is always out of sight when you use it. So make really sure you do it right. Maybe do a little test in water shallow enough to recover the snchor, should the splice slip.

Very easy. Found a YouTube video and brought my laptop outside. Took about 30 minutes. Tested it back and forth few the windlass a few times with no hickups. I'll anchor in a shallow area this weekend and keep the splice above water to make sure she's good.

Definitely play with your clutch slippage. I set mine to slip before it pops the breaker.

I would consider buying a replacement rope that's connected to a new 318. I'm sure you can sell that idea to the admiral.

What's the best way to adjust it?

She's a tough sell. Just got off the phone with jsimon who loves his 318.....there is one in FL I have had my eye one for sometime!

I hear a friend just picked up a 358. You need to wait a few years before you look at moving up
