I added a Minkota Edge 55lb to the front of my 18 foot Horizon. 55lb was the most for a 12V system. I think it was a 48" shaft.
They make a composite plate that mounts onto the boat - and then you can quickly take the trolling motor on and off using the adapter plate.
This does two things: you can utilize a standard cover; and remove the trolling motor when just joy riding.
The composite plate is relatively small and overhang was not an issue. To account for the front end boat curve - I stacked a combination of washers/rubber spacers to the front two screws to get the unit level. It turned out to be a sturdy installation. No problems at all over the last two years.
Great advice.. exactly what I want to do.... The composite plate, did it come with the unit or did you purchase it separately? The curve of the boat was also a concern.. you resolved by washers/spares. Did you run the power wire to the 'dashboard' cigarette lighter plug (and it goes away when you disconnect your Edge) or did you run a separate line to the front of the boat?
