OK guys - it's officially spring now... so when are you planning to get out next? This weekends weather forecast here in Melbourne looks pretty poor (windy with rain), so probably out of the question for me. Maybe the next weekend.... :( Can't wait to get out on the bay again...

Last weekend was pretty good !

I plan to get out for a ski at Morgan (SA) the weekend before the long weekend. I am hanging out to get my feet wet and carve some glass again

Has anyone been to Hazelwood Pondage?

It looks a great place for rough weekends - especially in winter as apparently the water temp is 22 degrees all year round.

I can't find any info though on whether its open all year round so might just have to go down and take a look.

I've never been there JB, but I believe the pondage is open pretty much all year round except for a couple of sailing regatta days. A lot of the wakeboard clubs at the universities use it - water temp is 23C all year round. I think there is a boat ramp in the caravan park plus a public one. I am hoping to take a look at it this year.

G'day, I booked in my Sundowner 245 for a service at JV Marine in Braeside VIC and was quoted today a price of $1,200. This includes yearly service - oil change, oil filter, petrol filter, exhaust risers, drive unit oil change, impeller check, power steering as it is loosing oil and trim guage sender. Anyone out there think this is a bit steep to pay?? I do as I did a major service last year and it cost me $600.00 from Fleet Marine.

Seems extremely high mate. I suggest you look around for a marine engine company to service your engine, unless there is a warranty reason you have to get it serviced at JV. What engine is it?

Try these guys -

J J Marinecraft Pty Ltd 9690 0713
40 Boundary Street South Melbourne VIC 3205
Engine sales, service, repairs & parts. Volvo Penta dealer

This is not a recommendation, but they might at least be able to give you a quote so you can see if JVs is right.

Peter, my last service at Fleet was $1000... filters, oils, impeller, spark plugs etc. A bit steep I thought... you got off lightly at $600..!!

But then again, VP parts are not cheap here - if I recall it was $50 for a fuel filter and $40 for an oil filter and $130 for an impeller... I did my own service this year bringing the parts in from the US and saved a fortune. Filters were around $8 each and the impeller kit around $80. Quite a difference. All up cost me around $230 including oils.

As JB says, try JJ marine Craft - they are the VP distibutor for Vic and supplied Fleet Marine. I have always found them to be pretty helpful.

Considering that JV are doing risers, trim senders, PS leaks etc. I think $1200 may not be that bad... these are all 'dog' jobs... Let me know how you go with JV, I'm interested as they are close to where I work so easy to drop the boat off there.

Hi Alec, where abouts from the US do you buy your parts from. I have also been told by JV that the exhaust risers need to be replaced at a cost of $550.00 each. I searched on internet and found a place called Marine Parts Express (US) who have the Risers and gaskets for (USD)$286 = (AUS)$308.00 each plus delivery.

Regards

Peter

Hi guys
Jim from Bunbury in WA here. I own a Horizon 180. Bought it new 3 years ago but so far has hardly been used - 20 hrs on the clock. Last week took the boat in for a service and have been told that there is water in No 4 cylinder. Boat has not been in water for over 12 months. Am told no real damage done just a little surface rust which can be cleaned off. Mechanic has said that this is a common problem with these boats and comes as a result of water surging back through the exhaust system. To overcome, they install a riser kit on the exhaust. To my way of thinking, if this was a common problem, the riser should be installed at manufacture or prior to delivery. Has anyone else had a similar problem. Wont bother to elaborate on problems with the trailer.

Hi Peter, yep, I get my spares from Marine Parts Express. Good service and reliable. Usually takes them a couple of weeks to get the items in, then about 1 week to mail them to Oz. Freight on the risers may be expensive - you may want to check first.
