Probably a bit late for this recommendation. If your going to consider the Colorado river lakes, Mead is awesome and it has Vegas not too far away. But, for sure Powell is the crown jewel on the Colorado. 614 from your place to Page, Az.
If you want my 2 cents worth, that is the lake to see.
Take interstate 40 west to Flagstaff, Az. then north to Page Az.
Must see, Rainbow bridge! Indian ruins, petroglyph's, arches, amphitheaters, hiking, fishing ect... there is over 1900 miles of shore line, 95 canyons off the main channel. You can always find seclusion.
Of course someday, I hope to take our boat back east to see some of the murky waters on that half of the country. We just got back from Louisville Ky this last week, of course I had to visit marinas on the Ohio river and look at boats. Water is warm, but awfully murky.....
I guess I am too used to our clean cool mountain lakes.
